Is it Os/2, NT, 95/98, or Linux.

For me I vote 98
because i think it the best cause it easy to use and it so reliable!
LOL most of the time that is, as long as it boot up OK, and no lock up etc.

Well, I ran BeOS 5 pro for the last 36 hours...and I can honestly say, I am tired of it. too many clicks to get what I want it to do. Guess I can get used to that. I LOVE windows 2000 pro tho. It is my favorite. I think one thing that kills BeOS is that you have nothing to do. It has no games built in, there is no java support so you can't play java games, and you are limited to what apsp you can use. The IRC apps are quite buggy, as are the ICQ apps.
But, it is neat...for version 5, you would think it was farther along. I don't see much change from when I ran 4.0 a while back.
Windows ME will be a nice change/addon for Windows 98 when it is done...I can see many people changing over to that from 98.

What I commonly have to use: POS Win98 http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

What I prefer to use: OS/2 Warp!!!! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
OS/2 is extremely powerful and near perfect stable. Too bad you can't hardly find software for it anymore.

My next: I will probably goto QNX (Quick Unix) when it goes freeware in a couple of weeks.

I use Win98SE, I would like to get a copy of Win2000, no $$ though!
I can't wait for Millenium, though.

I love Linux, I just need to learn how to fully use it http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
The choice OS for us legit hackers!

It depends on what I am doing. I like Linux - I like the idea, the philosophy, of Linux.

Most of the time I use Win98 - it works.

Not a gamer, steady as a rock, manages resources very well. Bought one of the MS prize copies at a good price.
But then, I did have to get a different scanner.

For my laptop, NT 4.0. Only takes up 140 MB or so. (2k takes up 800). For my server, Linux. NT is too cumbersome for it.

Win2K - It's been running continuously for 44 days now - nuff said.

That said, I really like Cmonster's comments regarding Linux. Also, if the DOJ gets to do the slice and dice on Microsoft, the Penguin crowd will really have a shot...

Only because I dont have any money for Win2k, and I can only use these two as I want my multiple monitors to be supported.

Without a doubt, NT 4.0!

I'm operating so stably across all my 10 platforms that it's scary sometimes!

I'll eventually break down and eval test NT5 (a refusal to acknowledge the Win 2K moniker), but I'm currently in no rush to jettison NT 4.0 as it's treated me real well over the past couple of years!

[Win98 seems like a real cheesy upgrade of Win95. I don't like the look/feel of the Explorer interface and I find it to be just a gussied-up 95! I think MS tried to stuff 10 pounds of stuff into a 5 pound box and ended up using a 20 pounds of packaging! It's an HDD hog and as you can probably tell I'm not a raving proponent of 98!!!]

My second favorite OS is HPUX. It's the Cadillac of the available UNIXes, but I only get to use it at my client's sites, as it's too cumbersome to deploy on a real small operation like mine.

Just my $0.02 worth...

Tony

well i would like to say Win2000, but (and there is always a but) as a gaming platform IT STINKS. I would also like to say Linux cause i just absolutely love it, but few people are developing for it and the front end is terrible. This kinda leaves me apathetic towards both. Because im a hardcore gamer Win2k is pretty much out of the ?. So im left with Win9x or Linux. Hummm well Win9x is kinda like having a ferrari with a 4 cylinder engine and linux is like having a pinto with a V-12. Maybe some day someone will actually create a powerful OS like linux with an equally powerfull front ent like Windows but untill then i will continue to scoff at both. Dont get me wrong ill still use both but that doesnt mean ill like it lol.

In this order:
Linux (speed and security and very straith forward, FREE)
win2000 (eficience plug and play and never crashed once)
beos(easy to use and FREE)
win98se (worst nithmare around, slow, crashes, not multy user, etc)

before win2000 i hated microsoft, but now i can leave with them..... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Slackware 7.0, kernel 2.2.15.
Once you go Slack, You never go Back

And Enlightenment with the right combo of Themes and GTK Themes kills Win98s look.
