If I start up Defragmenter (for Win98SE), and after about 10 minutes or so I exit the program only after it's defragmented part of the drive, do the changes remain?

Mntsnow 05-18-2000, 04:06 PM Yep http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Just throws it anywhere it can when you move on to something else Mntsnow Win_98 05-18-2000, 05:09 PM i think defragmenting hard drive is a complete waste of time if you delete files and copy files often it does ya no good. btw: it only for slow hd and even so it too long to defrag just so the harddrive make a little less trip for accessing files. Brydon 05-18-2000, 06:20 PM Well I have to say I class it as an important part of my regular PC maintenance and if you use a proggy like speedisk it doesn't take long. In fact I think there are many benefits to be had from a defrag as it makes the system faster and can prevent a lot of crashes...maybe you should give it a try http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. AuraEdge 05-18-2000, 06:22 PM It does make it faster - I have an ATA/66 7200 RPM harddrive, and I defrag on a regular basis (whenever the comp has gone thru some mad disk thrashing). You can definitly notice defrags benefits on any speed harddrive, even on SCSI monsters. raider rick 05-18-2000, 06:35 PM I defrag, using Norton 2000 SpeedDisk, at least once a week. If I run it twice a week, it takes half as long to complete. It works, it will speed up your system. Mntsnow 05-18-2000, 06:47 PM Whooo....You mean to say you DON'T defrag Win_98? Boy your missing out on a bunch of performace http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I personally use Norton's defrag utility as I also use a static swapfile and it moves it to the front of the drive to even optimize performance even more (the outer edge of a harddrive is the fastest btw) Mntsnow jadison 05-18-2000, 07:28 PM I found Speedisk to be very useful, unfortunately it was the trial version, no longer works now! I had a schedule going where I seta list of performance options, boy it kept my computer in top shape, then one day it said "sorry your trial version is over, you may now buy the product" Oh well, back to Windows defrag and scan disk http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif -jd- SysOpt.com
