I'm sure most of us have a few old systems lying around, collecting dust and obsolecense. But I know some of you have multiple systems that you seem to use regularly. What's the spare one for? Not counting computers at your work, obviously, since you don't really own it. It is because you can't share with others and you need your own? Is one a gaming monster and the other a work machine?

I use my K6-3/450 for gaming and work, and it's the one I tweak around on. It's laplinked to an old P233 that I use for extra storage, and it's my "second" screen when I need it for that. I've also got another K6-3/450 that my girlfriend uses for work (database stuff) and a little bit of gaming. I'll get these three networked one of these days. I've also got a bunch of 486, 386, and 286 comps in the basement in various stages of repair and when I get time I'll part out what's salvageable.

I threatened to render to usless if mom doesnt upgrade soon =P.
It took 4 hours to install printer drivers in Win3.1 on the thing.
and it took even longer to print with the new printer mom picked up cuz the last one crapped out. so....I gave up.

Any room for you in the house Gene?
Wow, could I have fun surrounded by that kinda hardware!
My list is short. 3 working computers networked on a hub connected to a cable modem.
1- PII350
1- 166mmx
1- 188mmx
One for me to surf, study, and play. One for the wife to play solitaire, use office 2000, and chat. One for the kids to play games, play on neopets.com, and do homework.
I have 3 kids so I'm sure I'll be adding more computers soon. Mine is the 188, the wife's is the 350, the 166 is the spare or last resort when the others arent available.
The kids prefer my 188 over the 350.
It's very fast for what it is. So I am often stuck with the 166 in the basement.
I also have a 486/66 and a P100 which work but not being used. I hope to sell em someday. And of course I have the usual variety of parts lying around, a few 386's, etc.
Hmmm, just a decent mobo and I can build another...

1-My celery 366 @ 458. For all my needs.

1-Our laptop P-166. Use when I go on deployments with the military so I can talk to the wife all I want for free. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
I have them all networked together. When we move into our house I'm planning on getting a cable modem.

05-17-2000, 10:41 AM
Well, I have a little list too!!!
1: Athlon 650 with 256Mb and 2x18.2Gb (nr 1)
2: K6-2 450 with 64Mb 133Mhz, 10.2Gb (nr 2)
3: Cel2 533 with 64Mb 133Mhz, 10.2Gb (nr 3)
Nr 1 is the pc I'm typing on the internet with now!!!
It currently also does the rc5 crunching, but that'll soon be done by nr 2!!!
Nr 2 is gonna be my little workhorse, as soon as I get it complete, for I will be doing all the socalled "paperwork" on it!!
And offcourse rc5!!
I'm just waiting for the mobo, then I'm off!!
Nr 3 doesn't exactly exist at this moment, but it will in about7 to 10 days, for then I receive my paycheck!!
this will be my little experimental system, like extreme o/c'ing, registry editing, or at least trying, and that kinda stuff.
They are all gonna be on a network!!!
But can I let them all work on rc5??? I mean, a combo of these 3, counting that the CeleronII will get to at least 750, will crunch an accountable amount of numbers, wouldn't you think???
The k6-2 450 is gonna be running at 575 again, as before!!
So that comes to:
Athlon 650Mhz
K6-2 450@575Mhz
Cel2 533@750Mhz
Yes, that should do nicely indeed!!!
I also have 2 486 dx4 100Mhz's and a 386 25Mhz, but the 486's have no memory, the 386 does work!!!
Faster startup then any of my other systems, hahahaha!!! LOL

and now on with the question at hand. it's hard to believe that out of 8521 members. we are the only ones that have machines. bet, they had a hard time signing up for the board. he he. so some where, there are over 85 hundred missing machines.

Hi Gene C.!
Well, I have 7 of those 8500 (hehehe)!
Hey Mntsnow!
Looks like my place except I don't have W2K Server up and running yet. Very difficult to learn. My hats off to you on that one. I don't have Linux or the UPS either. Does that HPLJ III have an internal or external Jetdirect card? You didn't mention it in your drawing.
Do you like tape drives? (hehe) What was your reasoning for not using them at the server level instead?
about to have 5, i have 3 right now, one is not functional, i'm building 2 more, one based on duron, one based on celery 2 566 http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Gene....You are SO RIGHT!!
Nathan, The HP IIID (The "D" stands for Duplexing option=Print's both sides of the paper. It really saves on paper for when I print manuals for my customers!) is on an external Jetdirect box. As for the Tape drives they are all 4mm Dat's (4/8gig) that I had installed prior to me networking them. I actually just ordered a DLT 4000 ADIC VLS DLT 4000 mini changer (20/40gig per tape 7 tapes to tray...so 140/270gig per load) and when I get it installed and configured ALL backups will be handled via the server http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif (no more worrying about if Wife and daughter (so I guess you could say I have my own little "IT staff" at home) remembered to load their tapes as the backups are set on "crons".

We get those size tapes at work. They aren't cheap either. It's nice not having to worry about the users not backing up there data, isn't it? (hehe) I'll give your IT staff at home credit for trying some of the times.
Those IIID's were workhorses, that's for sure. I wasn't aware that they had a duplexing option on them. Anyway, we are getting rid of those at work. To out dated for what's out there now.
Mntsnow
05-17-2000, 08:28 PM
Yeah....They are workhorses alright! but for a much printing as I do 8ppm is plently fast and was a LOT cheaper than a new HP http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif and a LOT cheaper than trying to print manuals on a inkjet! LOL

We've been getting those 4000 & 4050 LJ's. Man can they pump out the jobs too! The price ain't too bad I guess. Everything is more expensive when you have to have a JetDirect card with it. But what is really interesting is the color laserjets. They keep them going almost the whole 8 hours each day, except when you have to reboot them. Some have 16 & 32 MB of ram in them. They have to be cleaned every 3 months too. There are 4 of the big cartridges for each color, 5 total.

05-17-2000, 08:43 PM
Those are fine for what you need them for. But I'd have to laugh. I'm almost forgeting how to program some of those older printers for an IP address. Hehe...the newer ones are really simple to do. We got a 4050 in today that I have to install tomorrow. All we have to do is, give it an IP address, plug a cat5 into it, and let netware look for the MAC address. Getting a little lazy I guess huh? lol

no large family, single, just me and my 11 cats. 5 full grown and two of them just had 3 kittens apiece. if you think that is alot. you should see my hardware and software list. I'm starting my studies for ntws/server/novell net-ware. so 6/8 of them are going to be my home study lab. I want a full office networking setup.
and like I said they are my whole world and love. and no, none of them were given to me. I bought them all. I have to be carefull what I say here. some will think I'm bragging. but, I work hard for my money. and I have nothing else to do with it.""and I don't drink or go out""
and to me that is the greastest rush in the world to have alot of them start up at once with all hardware connected. I have a shoproom with all of them in it. and two 20 amp breakers outlets ran stright from the box for my power outlet.
besides ladies collect shoes,hats ect.
