I have a 3Com shark fin.
No, really, it looks like a shark fin, though it tastes like plastic.
3Com HomeConnect with USB
Model 3CR29223
USB didn't work (installed 3/4 months ago) and needed a patch, so I used the NIC connection.

qball: do you use the USB connector? If so how does it compare to the ethernet?

Sorry, as stated I tried the USB connection first, as NICs tend to slow winders boot. That failed. As I have a bunch of NICs, I just bit the bullet, installed and haven't looked back. I later recieved an email explaining how to set up the USB connection and where to download the patch, but not worth my time.
Now I could be a total doofus and hook up both and claim I doubled my bandwidth!

External Terayon @home Cable modem (well its a router really, don't know why they call them modems still).....
Modem = Modulate & De-modulate 'Analog' (which the @home "routers" don't need to do anymore).

Adelphia supplied the cable modem at installation along with 1 NIC for free - it's still thier property. The modem is a RCA DCM235.
I've purchased a D-Link DI-704 router and set up all 4 box' to use the same connection. The router cost around $100 at CrapUSA.

Originally bought the 3Com shark fin. After I was unable to access the internet and the tech guys stopped by, they found it was defective and strongly suggested the Motorola. I've now got the Surfboard SB4100 and love it. Best feature, a button in front you can use to instantly disconnect and reconnect to the internet.

p.s. The surfboard (and all modems offered by Cablevision) was $100 after rebate.

RCA DCM105, actually made by Thompson of Indiana, assembled in Mexico. It works OK, not had a minutes trouble out of it but the actual cable part has been a bear now and then. Luckily the neighbor has one two and we compare to see if is mine/his/cable's problem. So far it has all been cable's issue.
Only thing wrong with the modem is it has a silly little email LED that has/will never work. <sigh>

I have 3com shark fin modem just like qball, and i'm pretty happy with it, it's part of the service for my cable company (road runner) so i don't know how much it costs.. i like how it looks tho, the lights make it look a little alienish, or maybe its just me. =D

Same here...sharkfin by RoadRunner. Seems to run ok. Good conversation starter. Have guests over and they always ask, what the heck is that thing... hehehe...
BTW: I heard that using the USB instead of the NIC is worse? I was told by RoadRunner that it is actually slower and more unstable.
