Well,
You have 2 options I can think of....
You can use your 1st comp as the server for
the internet connection and bypass it from
there into a 2nd computer assuming you
configure it right.
The other is two buy an DSL ethernet modem
and use a router to split the IP between the
two computers. Personally I like the 2nd
since you usually get a fire wall and you
don't have to have the first computer on to use the internet.
I will say though inorder to do the first
option you would need 2 network interface cards.
There are advantage and disavantages to both
though.
1st option Advantages:
1) It's cheaper this way
1st comp Disadvantages:
1) it takes a little time to configure the
connection.
2) You have to have the 1st comp on to use
the internet for the second comp.
3)Could possibly slow connection
2nd Option Advantages:
1) You will be able to add computers later on
more easily
2) Connection will likely run faster
3) You will have a built in firewall
2nd option Disadvantages:
1) More costly
2) have to know some basic networking
knowledge.
P.S. most hardware comes with a prett good
manual.
Get back if you have any other questions.
Sorry for the length. Hope that helps http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks for your info.
Can you give me an rough esimate of what it would cost me for both of the options? This will be the deciding factor of whether I will set up a dedicated gaming server or just sell this extra pc to a buddy.
Of course I will be wanting play on the server also.
As far as your lengthy post, the more info the better!
Thanks

Oh yea...un let me see..
I am basing this info on what I have seen on
the web and at retail computer stores.
The first option of bypassing the connection
to another computer from the first would
include:
Costs 1st option:
1) CAT 5 ethernet cable
(length determines price, not too
expensice though )
2) 2- 10/100Mb Network interface cards
anywhere from $15-$50 per card
(you can get a good Linksys or Netgear
for about $25 each)
Or you could get a new ethernet based modem, plus a router, 2-Network interface cards, and
CAT 5 ethernet cable.
1)Network cards (See above)
2)CAT 5 Ethernet cable (See above)
3)DSL modem for ethernet (guessing $150-$199)
4)Router for DSL/Cable around ($100-$150)
(Again Linksys and Netgear are good brands)
***If you choose this route, get a router
with a built in auto-sensing 10/100Mb
switch it will make your life easier.
I won't disagree that the first option is
cheaper, but if you have the extra money the
second option will give you greater
possibilities to add on and provide a
FIREWALL. The FIREWALL is something that is
definately a PLUS.
Any other questions be sure to get back.
Oh yea...make sure to check with others
about my info just to be safe...
Hope that helps http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
*** This assumes you can configure it right.
