My laptop (KDS VALIANT 6480IPTD P3-800 20GB 128MB 8X DVD 56K LI-LON WIN ME) needs joining my home network(with other two PCs).
I am using a SMC EZ USB 10/100 adaptor, USB port of the KDS. The setup of the SMC driver on the KDS looks fine. "winipcfg" display its ip 192.168.0.4, gateway 192.168.0.1, DNS... hostname all right. But the KDS won't talk to any PC. can't be seen by any PC. can't go to internet.
I did comparision of the KDS' network setup to other PCs'. looks OK. But the KDS keeps standalone.
I think the problem from the KDS laptop. I tried another D-link USB adaptor, got same problem. I know both D-link and SMC EZ working on desktop PC.
Can anybody here tell me what's the problem of the KDS and how to fix it? the KDS has an OPTIONAL of internel network card but I did not use any card try.
Thanks.

I have this laptop (great laptop especially fo the price). I have it connected through my linksys 4 port router to two other computers using an smc 10/100 pcmcia card.
Just a few questions for you so we can help you out alot easier.
1. What os is running on the other computers in the network? 9x or 2000?
2. Do you have file and print sharing for microsoft networks selected?
3. An what type of network protocal are you using? tcp/ip etc.

It's a great deal. I got it from buy.com last week.
the OS is Windows-ME.
I have file and print sharing for microsoft networks selected, as my two other PCs.
The network protocal I set are TCP/IP and netbeui. One question, should I add IPX/SPX to the KDS laptop? I did not add it right now.
Thank you for your quick response. May I have another question? The KDS laptop runs quite noise, doesn't it? The IBM HD should not make much noise. Where the noise comes from? fans?
Thanks again.

the noise comes from the fan. It's not that bad once you get used to it and it does do a good job cooling down the system which helps alot.
Is it noisy all the time. Cause theres a setting in the bios for performance or economy. Performance setting has the fan running all the time while economy (something close to named like that) only turns the fan on when the system starts to heat up.
Okay so you have file and print sharing enabled on all computers.
Try this setup for your network as its similar to mine. Have client for microsoft networks and microsoft family logon. For each have windows logon as the primary logon.
Under client for microsoft networks choose logon and restore network connections.
give that a try for now and see what happens. If you have any more troubles feel free to email me i'll be glad to help out.
Can you ping the other computers from your laptop? Can the other computers ping the laptop? If yes to both questions, then your TCP/IP protocol is working fine and the problem lies with your Microsoft Network settings.

Jaida, I tried but still no progress. getting DNS, domain name, gateway... everything looks right! But no networking at all. I notice you are using an smc 10/100 pcmcia card while I am trying an SMC usb adaptor. Does this cause the problem? or the KDS must use a pcmcia card?
on KDS website, I can't find useful guidance.
To confirm it's not my router(RT314) problem. I connected the laptop and a desktop using a crossover cat5 cable. It did not work. but it did work to two PCs.
DanU, my two desktop can ping each othre but won't ping the laptop(192.168.0.4).

Are they on the same workgroup? Seems they are able to talk to each other

Beaver that shouldn't be a problem uinsg the usb adapter.
Not being on the same workgroup would be the most logical guess right now.
Also (I know this sounds stupid) but are you logging on not using the same user name as the other computer?
just checking

Thank you so much.
Tried too many times.
1. I remember win-me does not have to keep the same group name on newwork.
2. To try, I right now set all three same group name (beaver http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif)
3. MS family logon is used for the three, no password required to each computer.
I did search in this group. A guy post a network way using usb http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum6/HTML/002575.html
but I did not exactly agree what he said because, as I said, I could hookup my desktop to internet cable using the usb adaptor instead of the device he described.
