Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : need help setting up network
I have tried in the past to network My HP and Compaq compters-hp running win98se and the Compaq running win98. Last time I gave up on hooking these two together and ended up networking a few other computers together and it worked ok but for some reason when I try to network these two together I have nothing but problems. If I use the setup program from the linksys disk and run network test both computers connect fine but not in windows. I have some screen shots from both puters at the link below if it helps any. Also both have linksys Ether16 Lan cards in them. No IRQ conflix. Maybe I'm just overlooking something??

Hello,
Why IPX… protocol – this protocol originally belongs to Novell (I am not so familiar with Novell and I might be wrong) and if you want run it, each computer will have to have a unique number on the network, segment of the network (0 will do) and the frame type. You can use NetBEUI, as it is faster and if you want to share Internet connection over LAN you will have to set-up TCP/IP.
Hope it helps.

Since you seem to be primarily using IPX then you should set the Frame Type to 802.2 on both (don't use autodetect). Also check mark the box that says to use that as the Default Protocol.
Change one computer to be the Master Browser and disable it on the other.
This is found under Start|Control Panel|Network|MS File & Print Sharing|Master Browser

DVNT1 I'm wondering if on a three comp setup if two Browse Masters are disabled and one is auto? Or disable all three?

Don't disable it on all the computers. You want one to be the Master Browser (either Enabled or Auto should work fine for it).

See if this works:
Click on the NE2000 Compatible network adapter, then click ADD. Highlight Protocol then click ADD. Choose Microsoft on the left and TCP/IP on the right. The click OK and reboot. This will bind TCP/IP to the NE2000 Compatible adapter. Do this on both.
I hope this works.

The items on this link usually cover most problems. http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/browse.htm
It may be best (for troubleshooting) to add another protocol (TCP/IP or NETBEUI) to both computers.
