I have recentally gotten a cable modem. At first the speed was great, but I think that it is slowing down. I was wanting to find a website or a utility that would let me test the speed of the modem. Any suggestions? Also, could you tell me how fast I should expect the service to be. I know it will differ by area, but a rough estimate would be nice. Thanks.

For bandwidth tests, try the following:
http://tech.msn.com/internet/speedtest.asp
http://www.2wire.com/services/bwm.html

I run the freeware version of AdSutract which increases performance 10 fold. Ya also should install some type of firewall. I suggest staying away from McAfee Firewall as it causes you to use 100% of your processor - ALL THE TIME! I dropped 20 degrees F when I stopped. Try Zone Alarm - it's free.

Hope this helps.

For tweaks go here (http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_patches.shtml)

Get ZoneAlarm (it's free) here (http://www.zonelabs.com/)

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all of the feedback. The first thing I did when I got my Cable Modem was install Zone Alarm. I just ran a few speed tests and found that I get a little more than 1Mbps. That sound about right for a cable modem?

My average download speed is 390 Kbps.
I have hit up to 500 Kbps, but not very often.

do't know much about cable, but, if it's really just slowing down, it most likely because people are joing the line and it slowing everyone down. You can "uncap" this i think, though it's probably illegal, and unethical. I don't know how to, don't ask me. I was talking to some one on direct connect, they said they were on an uncapped cable connection getting between 800-1000k/sec. SO that would be nearly an 8 Mb connection, hhmmm, could have been a compulsive liar, but i suppose it's possible.
lucky BA******, getting all these fast connections, I'm happy with a 3/sec download, but i uaaually get below 2
