Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Bad NIC ??
I wonder if someone could help me,
I'm trying to network 2 computers. My first computer is running Windows 2000 Pro, the second has Windows 98 SE installed.
Now previous to the Windows 98 installation I was running Windows 2000 Pro on both computers, I had them connected via an RJ45 straight cable and everthing was fine.
I've now removed Windows 2000 Pro on my second computer and I've installed Windows 98 SE, with the same cable and NIC's as before, and each with a seperate IP address and a subnet mask, but when I try to ping each computer I receive a "Time Out" error message ??
Any Comments or Suggestions appreciated....
Thanks..

Are the drivers set up correctly?
Try doing a "ping 127.0.0.1".
If that times out, it's either your drivers or your network card (it's pinging itself internally).
If that works, it's possible your network cable went bad. Either borrow a tester or a different crossover cable. I've had network cables go bad on me before.

Also, do you have NetBeui enabled on both machines?
File sharing turned on?
workgroups the same?
What Class address do you use?(this doesn't really matter, but I use the 10.x.x.x for simplicity, with default mask of 255.0.0.0)
I have 2 W2k machines and a 98SE on my network and I just use 10.1.1.1,10.1.1.2 and 10.1.1.3 for the ip addys.
Also, mine are going thru a linksys hub.
This is assuming the cables are good.
Forgive if I bring up thing you have already tried, just some more things to check http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Thanks Desmocat,,,
I can't think of any reason why this setup is not working..? As I mentioned above I havn't touched the NIC's or the cable, I simply replaced the Windows 2000 operating system with Windows 98 SE and set TCP/IP settings for both computers. Are there any other tests I can perform to see if it is the NIC or the cable ?
Thanks......

It certainly sounds like a driver problem since you only changed OS.
Other than PING, you can also use the NET DIAG command to test the cable & NIC.
See http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/netdiag.htm
If you can bring in a 3rd computer it could help determine which of the two computers is the problem.

Update..
I've run Winipcfg on my Windows 98 computer, and (Ethernet Adapter Information ) shows a Novell 2000 Adapter.. hmmm? Is this showing that I have the wrong drivers installed??
Second.. If this is my problem, how can I release all adapter settings in 98 ??
winipcfg /release /renew ???
I should also mention that this a D-Link NIC.
Thanks again..

The Novell 2000 Adapter is often used as a generic driver (at least with ISA NICs).
Try to update the driver through Device Manager with the specific D-Link driver.
I'm Back.......
Well, I found out my crossover cable was bad, so I've replaced it with a new one and I still get time out errors !! I know now that it must be this NIC. Does anyone know where I can find the proper drivers for a D-Link 220E NIC ??? I've installed a few different ones, but none seem to work or maybe i'm not insalling them right???
Thanks Again.......
