I would like to find something like a chart siting the differences in DSL plans. I think I may jump on the bandwagon soon and want to get the best for what suits me. Things I want compared are like price, speed, and reliability. Im looking at Earthlink DSL since they have been my dialup ISP for the last 4 years or so, but they are asking $50/month, and they dont even state what kind of xDSL it is.
I thought the going rate for DSL was around $40/month. Well any info regarding this stuff is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Mine costs $49 a month for 384 kbps upload speed and 128 d/l....free modem with a one year agreement and free dsl line installation. Mine's a smaller company though, based on my local phone company. ONly services Arizona, New York, some California, and a couple other states

My friend is using DSL while I am usong ATT cable. So far, I recommend internet cable instead of DSL.
The cable, a month free, 3 months $19.95/mon then $36/mon with your own cable modem, or $46/mon w/o the modem.
One issue, ATT technology is great. But ATT service is horrible.

Well if you go to DSL Reports (http://www.dslreports.com/) You will get so much info you might be overwhelmed. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

go to ********connected.com (http://********connected.com) then... go to the Internet section.. then there's a list for ISP's DSL dail-up cable... I don't remember where you have to put in an address to check for DSL.. I believe it is when you click on the DSL plan... IF you order DSL from ********connected.com (http://********connected.com) then you get a 25$ mail-in rebate... At the site, it tells you what type of DSL it has and etc.
Hope that helps...

Thanks
Im still confused about how fast ELN DSL is
256k? 512k? 768k? 1.5M?

It doesnt say anywhere
Ill check out dslreports
I also tryed Get connected, which I think I can get 25 bucks back off with that, but the DSL area check isnt working for me. I know ELN works for me though, because Ive gotten about 5 letters from them asking me to join.

Well I'm finding out alot of things from DSL Reports.
First off, Earthlink offers great speed, very bad support (I know of that already, but luckly, they dont have problems with the dialup that require support)

Its 1500/128 or 1500/384 depeniding on the provider. It is also Dynamic IP via PPPoE. I'm not sure if thats a good thing or not.

People are getting really good speed, with a person 14400ft away from the CO getting 1200+/200+. The Prequalifier says I'm 4450ft away, which I'm thinking is a relatively short distance from the CO.

Another thing that got me thinking about this is that Earthlink DSL used to cost $39.95, and the price got upped on some people, even those with 1yr DSL contracts. (I dont handle the Internet billing at my house, but I imagine that earthlink dialup is the same). It's kind of hard to trust a company that ties you into a contract and then bumps rates on you. I always thought that if you have a 1 yr contract, it stays at that price regardless if rates go up or not. According to some reviews of earthlink DSL, prices got bumped while they were still on thier first year, and consumers had to eat the extra 10 bucks/month.

Another thing
I'm also interested in cable, but I think it might be kind of complicated since I don't even have cable TV installed in my house, nor do I know if its cable ready. (ehh)
Since cable service is cheaper, and still offers great bandwidth, I would definitly be interested in that too.

If any of you can dig up links that answer some of my questions about cable, then could you post them here?
