Hello Sysopt,

I do website building and I need a really great software package for creating images for use on websites. I currently use Frontpage 2000 as the basic program. It came bundled with an image program called Image Composer. IC(Microsft)is okay. But it creates images that are rather large even if I take its format down to .gif level. And even then, it loses its quality.

Are there any other image programs that will create really good gtraphics? What image program did you use for this site?

Adobe?
Any other ideas for software?

I know I'm not SysOpt, but:-

I'm the webmaster for my school, and I use Paint Shop Pro as my image editor, for creating buttons, backgrounds etc. Also, if I'm in a hurry for graphics I'll use CorelDraw 8 to do a vector image, then export it as a gif, and this is quicker than using PSP.

Sysotps team probably dont use frontpage, they probably use dreamweaver or good old notepad. As for image editors, maybe they use fireworks or freehand, also by macromedia.

paint shop pro can do vector graphics now with version 6.0x. I use paint shop pro 6 also for my pages. i like how it has screen capture, can use photoshop plugins and has a shapes tool. all in all, its not that expensive either. you can get a demo copy at www.jasc.com (http://www.jasc.com) .

Adobe Photoshop is the programs which many professionals choose, I think by far it is the best, although it is VERY expensive and if you cannot afford it go for Paint Shop Pro. I have in the past used PSP for years and it is an exceptional program, one of the best out there in terms of function and price. Corel Draw and Photo Paint are alright, though I don't really like them, and find Photo Paint to be quite confusing.

If price is not an issue you might also want to go for a Photoshop plugin called Eye Candy. It is available at www.alienskin.com (http://www.alienskin.com) . It is capable of producing some amazing effects at the click of a button.

In terms of Frontpage 2k, I've used it for a while, it's not the best, but it works for my purposes. I often times will layout the page in MSFS2k and then edit manually to tweak the page how I like it. Another possiblity for an HTML editor is called 1st Page 2000. It is very functional, and it is freeware. It includes many features and it allows you to easily implement DHMTL.

If you have any other questions regarding web/graphics authoring software feel free to post or contact me via email.

I use Photoshop 5.5 for most of my graphics work. It's a very useful app. Still, I've never used a WYSIWYG editor - always done my HTML via a Unix command line (Pico, notepad copy and paste, etc.) so I don't know if Frontpage's image composer would be easier for you to use since it probably publishes the images to your site in one step - I embed the proper <img tags by hand and ftp the images from my local HD.
