Hi everyone,

Has anyone setup a private ftp server with comcast@home? If so, how do you do it? What need to be done in order to let only one person access to my HD? I've tried and my friend can't not ping me. Do I have to open a special port using Netgear telnet menu? Any kind of help is greatly appreciated.

My computer is currently connected to a Netgear RT314 and I already install G6 ftp server on my machine.

you need to get a server program. serv-u (http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10069-100-5933462.html?tag=st.dl.10001-103-1.lst-7-1.5933462) its only a trial tho but it works very well. im not really clear on the type of router you have but you have to have port 21 opeb to work. i also i believe @home does not allow servers. It was in the signed agreement i believe.

well @home may not want you running one, and they'll probably pick you off pretty quick if you run one on the default port of 21. you can specify a different port you want it to listen on from within your ftp server program like servu. just use a high port of your choice. another tip, don't enable an anonymous account. if you want a default account call it something else and give it a password otherwise you'll have way more 'visitors' than you want.

psyklone: how do you assign different port, using hardware or the ftp sever software?

that's something that you configure in your ftp server software.

yeah you will have to do that inside the program. usually it has in options or prefrences on what port you want to use.

I ran WinMX for about 7 hours with lots of downloading going on(GI Joe the Movie! Transformers the Movie!) and @home was trying to do something, I got about 500 blocked ICMP attempts from 3 different authorized-scan @home IP's. So...I think they would mind http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

hey tuando

I have the same RT314 router and am on and @Home network in Seattle. I am running an FTP (although outgoing data is horribly capped at 15k/sec by @home). I would definitely recommend configuring the ftp software on a different port. Something high like 2001 or 2100. You will need to also open up that port on your Netgear RT314 router. To do this you have to:

1. telnet to it (telnet 192.168.0.1)
2. type in your password (whatever it may be, if its even configured for a password)
3. then select option 15 (SUA Server Setup)
4. put in the port# you are using
5. give it the IP address of your local machine (be it 192.168.0.3 or whatever)

That should do it. Let me know if you need any more help. Here is a screenshot of that menu:

1000hours: I just send you an e-mail. Help please, I am desperate. You are probably my last hope. I've tried everything for days and I still can't ftp. I have no clue where to look software or hardware level. I've tried to connect the cable modem directly to the NIC card thus bypassing the router and I am still unable to ftp. The ping message is ok. However when I try ftp at the DOS prompt using a second machine with dial up connection, I receive "unknown host ipxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx". I also try ftp client (flashfxp) and I receive "connection failed).

If you don't mind, I can e-mail you my settings so you can take a look. Your help is great, great, greatly appreciated.

BTW, I just need to run it for a couple of days.
