Ok I'm pretty new to networking and I have a few questions about my new home network setup. My current machine is using ADSL and I need to know how to share the connection with a new machine that will be built. What hardware do I need? What type of NIC do I need for my new system? The new system will be running on Win98SE. Help would be appreciated...
I just did this same thing for the first time, and am still working it out. You'll need a hub the hook all the computers together. And I think that you will need a router, either the actual hardware or some sort of software that will route. But if you got the hardware you good get one with lots of porst and wouldnt need a separate hub. If the dsl connection will go directly into one machine, you'll need a second nic just for that connection, and the other to get you to the LAN. Otherwise I think that you can use the uplink port of a hub. Think geeting the network staight before adding the dsl connection might keep things clear. BUT, I litteraly just learned this stuff the other night http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif and could be wrong!

If you have an external adsl modem you will need a total of 3 network cards and 1 crossover cable. If you have an internal modem then you'll need 2 network cards and a crossover cable. No hub or router is needed. I have instructions on setting this up on my website: www.cjtyler.com (http://www.cjtyler.com) click on link to page 2

A Broadband EtherFast Cable/DSL Router is an option to connect multiple computers to a high-speed Broadband Internet connection. They are cheap - about $100 and easy to maintain. They can foil hackers because they are the only externally recognized Internet device on your local area network (LAN). The router can also be configured to block internal users' access to the Internet. see: http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10235958&loc=14577
