OK, I am new to this but here it goes.

Friend of mine has ATT cable. He wanted another computer (his sons)to share the internet service among other things. He bought another IP address and it works good with the other computer using a CNET Ethernet card.

On the server (DADS) he can see his sons computer and his own. He is using the Ethernet card that was installed during his @home installation. On his son's he sees nothing though he states that he has everything set to being shared. And sometimes on DAD's computer, network neighborhood loses site of the computers on the network.

Now I plan to go over and look at everything but I need some help so I know what to look for. Either from a great link or by personal experience is appreciated. Isn't there a standard protocol to doing this so I can troubleshoot easier?

Don't know if this helps but he is using a switch instead of a HUB. What's the real difference anyway?

Hi ck,
the difference between a switch and a hub is that a hub will split the bandwidth between computers on the network, while a switch will allot a certain amount of time to each user so that each person gets the full bandwidth.

As for you netwrok problem, look over your subnet mask and gateways...

Hope this works out.

You will probably have to install netbuei on both computers or make an lmhosts file on both computers.Installing netbeui is easier.

After a few hours of fun and reading around this site I found 2 problems, since I'm the one that was having the Network problem. Use of the Knowledge base solved my primary problem I downloaded the patch and installed on both systems and then made a few tweaks to my firewall fixed the rest. Thank you everyone for the help.

Could you please be a bit more specific about what fix you found/used? What patch are you refering to and what inparticular was set wrong? TIA for the follow-up info.

Detail on the fix for my networking problem. First I found in another networking forum a similar problem to the one I was having. My files or other computer would show up on my Network but then it would disappear or I wouldn't be able to access any files. I went to the Microsoft knowledge base and after some searching came acrossed the following web page http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q272/9/91.asp

After reading and checking the first 3/4 of the page it led me to the following patch

272991usam.exe

I ran this patch on both systems and my disappearing files stopped.

The second problem was with my firewall program since I had it before I had ever attempted to Network I had to make a few config changes to make it work with my local network, which was pretty much like following the bouncing ball.
