Hi all,
I just installed win2k on my lan. My 98
boxes can see each other and share just fine.
My win2k box will get files from the 98
boxes, but the 98 boxes cannot get files
from the win2k box...because it says the
password is wrong.
I tried to set a password, but for some
reason it won't take. I can see the win2k
box in the 98 network neighborhood, but
I get a window asking me to enter a network
password.
the reasource being shared says:
\\nameofbox\IPC$
I'm pretty sure I set a password for the
shared partition just like I did with the
98 boxes.
Running win2k with svc pk 2
What am I doing wrong?
thanks

The Win98 machines need a user account set to the same password as the administrator account on the Win2K machine (I use administrator as the user on the Win98 machine).
You also need to set a new share on the Win2K machine. The default share $C should be changed to another name.

Thanks Sterling.
So by creating an account for the 98 box
and giving it the same password as administrator on the win2k box...
does that mean that the 98 box will have
the same privileges as anyone logged on to
the win2k as administrator?

It isn't working...how do I set up an
account for the win98 box on the win2k box?
I named the account FIC box...no joy
then I tried giving the account the
computer name of the 98 box...which is also
it's @home ip address...no joy
(hmm, is this the kinda thing that needs a
reboot to take hold???)
please help
thanks

rookie when your accessing the win2k machine from the win98 and it ask for a password you have to use the login name and password that you use for the win2k machine to access the win2k machine.
hope that works

On the win2k box do the following
right click on the my computer icon
select manage from the options
click on local users and groups
go into the users folder
right click in an empty portion of the right side of the window
select new user.
fill in the user info and click create (use the same user name and password that they are using the the win98 machine)
right click on the user you just created and go to proporties
go to the member of tab and joing the user to what group you want themm to be a part of.
click ok
Try accessing the share from the win98 machine. It should work now.

I think part of the problem is that my previous lan (three 98 boxes) I had netbuei as the lan protocol and the default linksys setup is acting as a dhcp server...
How do I set up my lan with tcp/ip rather than netbuei?
I've been reading the http://helmig.com site...according to running command prompt
C:/>ipconfig readout says this:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix: catv1.md.home.com
I remember seeing stuff about having my lan be either a 'workgroup' lan or a 'domain' lan.
Is it possible that I have to change settings on the linksys to get the lan running on tcp/ip???
If I use the ip assigned by @home then what ever @home uses to keep everyone from being able to see everyone else in network neighborhood will keep my lan from being able to communicate with each other?
How do I get my lan up and running on tcp/ip rather than netbuei?
Do I have to change settings on the linksys?
I have seen stuff in the linksys advanced settings for ip forwarding or filtering...
so far those settings are beyond level of understanding.
thanks

You need to setup the linksys to be a dhcp server. Once this is done you will have to set each of the clients to use the tcp/ip protocol. when you do this select the option to obtain ip address automatically. This will make the clients request an address from your linksys router. Once this is done you should follow the previous directions to configure the clients to share.

Thanks alapeter,
I tried this when I first got the linksys...
I couldn't see the other machines until I
added netbuei.
The current set up is:
switch ip is 192.168.1.1
Host Name CC65765-a
Domain Name catv1.md.home.com
Winipcfg says:
Host Name cc65765-b.catv1.md.home.com
ip address 192.168.1.100
I have 2 ip addresses with @home
I'm thinking here that what ever @home uses to keep it's users from being able to see into everyone elses box is what is also keeping me from being able to see my lan
when I used netbuei it was fine...
how do I use tcp/ip with the linksys and @home?
thanks

I had the same exact problem.
If the above dont work, ( I tried it to no avail). You have to go to the local users and groups and make sure the Guest Account is not disabled.
That worked for me.
It was driving me crazy but seeing that it was the first time ever with Win2k, it wasnt that bad.
However.....
This is hardly secure if you are connected to the internet.
I suggest creating the accounts on the 2k machine

Rookie, go to control panel, click users and passwords, check users must enter a user name and passwords to use this computer then
click ADD enter user name and full name, then leave description alone, on type and confirm password, leave it blank if you don't want any password then choose whether you want a standard user or administrator privileges and you're all set.. at the end UNCHECK users must enter a user name and passwords to use this computer... Hope that solves your problem..... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
