Ok, I've got 2 Win98 machines hooked up with CAT 5 cable to a switch. How do I network? Do I use one machine as a server and one as a client? There are so many protocols. Do I use Microsoft Home Network option or Microsoft Client. Which protocol? I thought the hardware was the hard part.

Just add the client for Microsoft networks, the default protocol will be TCP/IP (no configuration needed in 98), add the file and printer sharing service, and you're on the way.

Each computer will have a name (keep it to about 15 characters or less, no spaces).

Share a folder (right click a folder, select sharing, choose between read only and full, put in a password if you want one.

Access computer2 from computer 1 by goint to

Start->Run and type 2 backslashes and the name of the other computer. That will bring up the shares available on the other computer.

Let us know how you do with all that, then we'll go from there.

to network you can just do a peer to peer. no server needed. basically your own computer is the server. make sure there under the same workgroup and turn on files sharing. you can use tcp/ip or netbui

They don't have to be in the same workgroup, but having them in the same workgroup will allow you to find them in the browse window a little easier.

If you're going to use ICS then, for security purposes, I would recommend using IPX/SPX for your file and printer sharing and game playing. I personally don't feel it's wise to use the same protocol to access the Internet as you do to share files on you LAN. Check www.homepcnetwork.com (http://www.homepcnetwork.com) for a step-by-step tutorial on the whole proceedure.

Just FYI, Windows ICS already blocks ports 137~139 from access from the public side. This means the File sharing can be done over IP for the private side but will not be available to the public. Unless you bind File & Print Sharing to the public NIC within the ICS host computer.
