I can handle both questions http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

1. MntSnow uses Visio to make those diagrams.

2. DSL providors generally do offer more flexibility in running servers and such (static IP's, better upstream speed options)... though sharing your connection shouldnt be a problem in either case (cable or DSL). It really depends on the ISP you pick. Right now I'm running a cable modem, share it with 3 computers and even host a domain name off of it. Not 'technically' allowed, but I get away with it by not abusing it.

Either of those machines should be fine as a proxy for under 10 machines... though if you are going to do more with it than just share the internet (web server, email, etc)... you might want to invest in some more RAM.

Max memory on the Pro is 128Mb, unless I buy some 64 Mb simms, which aint gonna happen. 384 I think on the 233 (Ali V with dimms.) Web server has been considered, but farther down the line. I thought it looked like Visio (we use it at work) was hoping it was a nice free Linux clone. (I am cheap, lol)

Jamis is correct I use M$ Visio 2000 to create my network diagrams.

As for your other question....Most ISP's do have a "limit" on total bandwidth usage either by week or monthly. Most around my neck of the woods allows about 2 gigs worth of transfer a week average (8 gigs is the monthly limit under the "private user" account types. Of course you can buy more bandwidth or go with a full blown business account which would have a higher bandwidth usage limit

I normally run 8 machines on my one cable connection 24/7 and really don't have any problems, unless both of my boys are d/l'ing from Napster/Bearshare/iMesh/etc, then it tends to slow down the other machines! I've never had a complaint from my ISP!

I have grown spoiled here, I know for a fact I have d/l well over 2G this week, I d/l the two disk ISOs for Mandrake 8, the Sparc Corporate Server, and Sparc 7.2. Of course, @home is just starting to take off here in Limburg, so perhaps there are not as many users and they are not too concerned about bandwidth. Plus I normally d/l at 133KB/sec from a FTP good server in France, Germany or the Netherlands.

I sure wish we didnt have limits http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif but we currently do. http://www.xmission.com/dsl/index.html and my old DSL provider was very strict about it. Looks like I need to either find another ISP or threaten to change to one http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif lol

I'm moving to Alabama from the Netherlands in a month, once we get there and settle in, I plan to set up a network to allow gaming, print sharing, and internet access.

Hardware is not a problem, besides the fact that I have to buy cables, ducting, boxes.

I do have a couple of general questions.
Are DSL providers more forgiving than Cable as far as letting me do whatever I want with the bandwidth once I get it inside my home? (Im not talking a child porn FTP site or anything, I just mean a proxy server, with multiple clients)

I plan to use a 233MMX or 200Ppro as a proxy server, firewall, router, PDC, running Mandrake 8.0 for 5 clients running Win9x, will this be enough power?

If I connect a printer to one of the PCs and share it, will it drag down the host box with 5 users( my family so not like an office)?

Finally, Mntsnow, what did you use to make this pic/diagram? http://digitalmntsnow.com/pics/networkpics/5-15-01%20MntsnowHomeNetwork.gif

Expect more to come in the future months, as I attempt to learn networking in Linux.
