I just upgraded my ethernet card to the realtek 8139. I insatlled the drivers that came with it but the machine would not complete boot. I went on to the realtek site and got the latest drivers, same thing.
On re-boot the machine locks for a short while then displays the message

While initializing device CONFIGMG

Windows protection error, you will need to re-start.

cant get round it, any ideas??

There's a MS article on it Here (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q187/6/12.asp) , but it may be an IRQ conflict or your video card drivers..sorry not too definitive, but maybe a start..

Smokin1,
Thanks for that, I dont have that MB, but I did a search on google and found a list of vxd's to reload. Did that still no joy, even tried another card, no joy. Finally tried original card in a new slot and, slowly, it booted (everything was fine without the card)

Heres the link (http://www.easttexaschat.com/_tips/vxd_drivers.htm)

Interesting info here, it implies that my win 98se has been running generic drivers, I dont know enough to say but it worked, kinda.

Hey G..
it was a thought..so are you saying that the new card still won't work?..or that it did in a different slot?

Worked in a different slot, having already updated/re-loaded the vxds.
