not an experienced linux user so sorry for the newby questions. But can anyone help me find out where to get info on using mangrade 8 as a gateway for windose clients? there aren't much read-me's and how-to's in the distros. I have 4 home puters and would like to use linux as a gateway, dns server, mail server.
any direction would be helpful.

thanx,

Here is the old way:
http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/IP-Masquerade-HOWTO.html

But I believe Mandrake 7.2 and 8.0 have some X-Windows configuration options for it under the Network settings.

Coincidentally this was the way I used to have my network setup (linux box was the server/router with a buch of Windows boxes connected via network). Now I use a cable/dsl router and just forward ports 80, 22, 25, and 53 (http, SSH, Sendmail, Bind/DNS) to the linux box.

drake 8 has extended a few network features in xwin. I downloaded a few proggies like pmfirewall, firestarter, and guarddog but having a hell of a time installing them.

Is there good firewall utility that's in RPM? Man 8 has a question and answer fw util. but doesn't have the control most ppl need like alowing some ports open for there own reasons.

I believe you can do packet filtering, port forwarding, opening ports, etc via IP-Masq/IPCHAINS... it should be in that doc i linked above.
