I currently have a Static IP/DSL 960u/418d connection via 3Com modem and a 3com NIC(SOHO100tx)installed in my W98 Computer. I would like to buy a Linksys BEFSR41 Router. I know I would have to install a NIC in my daughter's computer(W98). I see from most posts that the majority of people have DHCP and PPPoE connections. Is using this model router the best way for me to go to allow my daughter and myself to access the net at the same time? Or is there a 3com router that is better suited for the job? Is it more difficult or easier to setup the network for a static or a dynamic IP connection to the net? I can save a few bucks if I change my connection to dynamic, but I like having the same IP address assigned to me at all times. Thanks for the help and your time.

You should get a lot of feedback from this.

I think its user preference really. You dont have to purchase the router and can go with a software based program to share the connection. Both ways have advantages and disadvanteges.

If you go the software route you wont have to spend the money on a router, as a few nice programs are available and FREE for a simple two computer network. On the other hand, if both computers are on at the same time and both doing serious internet use, then performance will degrade dramatically.

Having a static addy is very nice and would require not more than selecting the appropriate window on the router "setup" page and entering in the addy.

If you need more info reply back with more questions.

I was very happy to have bought the linky router, makes life very nice. My only (minor)gripe is that it doesn't come with a print server.
I recommend the investment(for both the router and maintaning the static IP). If you go this route, your daughter's machine will be able to surf without necessitating your machine to be on as the 'Gateway'.
The router will aid in throughput for both machines.
The linksys router does have support for PPPOE, so that could help you make the decision.
The linksys router also has a very good built in firewall which will address any security issues.
Having no experience with the 3COM router, I can't say which would be better- but that linksys sure does a GREAT job.
Hope that helps!

You may want to try the Asante Router/Switch. You get NAT and can also get the modem/printer ports you need. You get all the firewall protection you will need. Web based setup is easy and fast.

Its on sale now and you get a free USB hub.

Also make sure you look at the SMC Barracade router. With the avaliable rebate on them you could walk away with one for around 60 bucks total
