Are you familiar with this site www.orbs.org (http://www.orbs.org) ? Basically they scan thousands of computers and maintain a database of IP's of computers that have open smtp servers that will relay mail. This is the way a lot of spam is spread around. Many large ISP's keep up with this list and refuse to receive email from a server that is listed. I was surprised to find some of our school's machines listed on there. I have since corrected them (fairly easily). I advise everyone who runs an email server or even has any type of unix box running to go to the website and see if you are listed.
