Hi, Ive just finished building a second computer and I wanted to hook it up to the dsl line that I already have. I would like to use both computers at the same time (actually my wife would use one). I've done a bit of research and found that there are a couple things that I can do. Use software to share the bandwidth, buy a router (which I did yesterday- Linksys 4 port), or purchase a new ip for $5 a month from my isp. I just found out about the last one this morning which throws a wrench into the works since I just bought the router. What kind of "work" will I have to do if I get another ip? Which would you prefer if you had the choice? Benefits? Disadvantages?

old system
p3-500
dsl 1500/384
linksys nic

new system
amd 1.2G
linksys nic

other stuff
linksys 4 port router
linksys 5 port hub (came with nics)
some cat5 cabling 65' or so

thanks

ben

I prefer the router.

To make use of additional ISP supplied IP addresses, you'll still need a hub or switch.

The router will offer an added level of security as it has some built in firewall features... and it also does alot of configuration for you that you'd have to set up manuallly (each machine's TCPIP settings, for example). It also offers the option for a 3rd or 4th computer without the need to get another IP address (and to pay another $5 a month) from the ISP... or if a friend came over with their laptop... tons more flexible http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Keep the router.. you made a good choice http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
