I'm wondering what causes windows 98 to pop up a message when shutting down that says "There are 1 user(s) connected to your computer. Shutting down your computer will disconnect them. Do you want to continue?"
I understand the basic reason. I'm on a network and I understand file sharing. I'm wondering if anything outside of general file sharing (like accessing a share on a PC and then that PC goes to shut down and generates the message above) could cause this message to come up? Could port scanning or pinging or something like that do it? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There's nothing evil happening there, just a reminder that another computer on your network was using a file on yours. When you disconnect the other user would lose all changes, so it tells you. Happens all the time here.

I agree, Nothing evil going on there. On non NT clients, you'll get that message even if someone isnt using your files but simply has a drive mapped to your machine. No need for alarm.

Pinging will not "connect" to another machine, nor will "port" scanning.
