I just what the input of all you guys and gals out there on which CD-R/RW I should buy that is reliable and gives good performance and not too pricey. Mind you, I wouldn't want a SCSI type just a simple and easy to install IDE model.

Hey: I bought a Philip's CDRW from Comp USA on sale for $ 129.95 plus tax( of course) and it works great. 4x4x32. I usually record at 2x , seems to work better. Don't get in no big hurry, but works fine at 4x too. Couldn't be more satisfied!!! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

And I got the Iomega Zip 650 External w/USB connection from CompUSA -- a little pricer, but I already have 2CD's (one a DVD) and 2 harddrives and didn't relish the thought of stuffing another internal drive in my case.
I'm happy with the easy setup and the speed (4x/4x). And now my precious jpg's are safe from the Love Bug!

I was thinking about getting the Ricoh MP7080A with speeds of 32x8x4 and has a 4MB buffer.
Is it better to write at the max 8x or at a lower speed?

I can personally vouch for the Creative CD-RW BLaster 8432. You can burn 100MB of data in around one and a half minutes. Not too shabby! It also comes with Nero Burning Rom software. It super easy and powerful to use. Plus you also get Prassi abCD software which allows you to format CD-RWs for packet writing so you can drap and drop files onto the CD just like a floppy disck.
Plextor makes some great CD-RW drives as well, but you'll pay a little more for them.

I've the HP 9110i and am very pleased with it. You can find a very good deal on it's brother at Onvia http://www.onvia.com/usa/products/index.cfm?Task=ViewProduct&CategoryID=67&IdCatalog=2478187 if you look for a $25 off coupon that's posted in a number of places. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm real happy with my Yamaha 4x4x16 I don't really think that you can go wrong with a cd burner. Make sure it comes with good software. Watch for this if you buy from pricewatch.

If you can wait about a month (it's scheduled to be available some time in June) Plextor is coming out with a new model, it's a 12/10/32, that's not a misprint it 12x write and 10x rewrite, and it will be an IDE drive, for under $250, including software. I have a Plextor 8/4/32 IDE drive after having 2 previous SCSI burners, a Panasonic, and a Plextor, and I am real happy with the Plextor IDE I have now, but I'm wishing for this new Plextor drive.

I'm from Australia, and that kind of technology is slow getting here. Pricewatch isn't available here (no pricewatch.com.au).
Also a lot of prices that has been mentioned, they are nearly double that in Australian dollars due to the weaker dollar we have here compared to the almight US dollar. As a measuring stick, the Australian dollar can be comparable to what the Canadians have, but only slightly more as well
