I am thinking about getting a dsl hookup. I checked with Bell Atlantic, and my phone# can be set up for it.
Has anybody had any experiece with Bellatlantic.net?
I have an old computer (pentium 60, 96 meg of memory. Is this enough hardware?
Thanks.

I haven't had experience with Bell Atlantic, but xDSL is pretty much the same anywhere. If you have Win9X or Linux (probably the better option for a P60), then you can use xDSL. Of course, you can run it with Win 3.11, and many other OSes, but win9x is probably easiest. Your max speed may be bottlenecked by the P60, and maybe having to use an ISA NIC on your mobo (depends on if you have free PCI, or PCI at all).

Another point: make a special request for a 256kbit upstream modem if you're getting ADSL. The standard 128kbit modems won't cut it for hosting servers.

Correct me if I'm wrong on anything here. More info on your setup and ISP would help too.

I have used both dsl and cable, and am currently with cable, as my new area is not wired for DSL.

You can definently use the service with a p60, but if things bottleneck at times, you know what the problem is. I would recommend a p166 with 64 megs ram for optimal usage.

P.S. Running server might not be possible, as most carriers are moving to dynamically assigned ip's via DHCP, as they have done in my area...

Otherwise, enjoy the speed, and try to get a PCI ethernet card....

I'm running DSL 256k through USWest. I like it well enough, but the service through my local ISP is a bit spotty. Their router tends to drop out 2-3 times a day for an hour or so. Anyone have any experiences to share on using USWest.net as their ISP? I'm thinking about moving over

Running a server on a dynamic IP is a bit tough. Take a look at www.dyndns.org (http://www.dyndns.org) though. You have to contend with your DNS info taking a while to update out across the internet when your IP changes, but it seems to work fairly well.

800XL-I use the MegaOffice 512Kbps through US West, and the only problems I've had was just the initial install.(Pain in the A**)

It was 2 months almost to the day from the date they quoted me before I finally had connectivity. It took 3 more months to get credited on my bill for the 2 months it was not working too. I think maybe I will go for it and try out USWest.net for my ISP too. If nothing else it gets everything on one bill. I just hope their terms of service are as open as my ISP.

800XL-It only took me 4weeks (1month) for connectivity. That was in part to testing my line and such. After that, no problems.
(Little hint: I work for them too. Engineering dept.)

800XL, is your ISP Teleport in Portland, OR by any chance? I have DSL through them, and yes, I often lose my connection throughout the day. I'm thinking of moving over to uswest.net too as soon as my prepaid service runs out in October.
