well almost.. Im happier than a pack of flies in a cow pasture. FINALLY after 2 years of waiting, they are working on putting in DSL here. I sure will be happy to get off this 56K. Anyway, I got a few questions.
I want to get my house wiring ready for DSL. Are there any specific types of wiring i need to install? I want to go ahead and install wiring in my house and run it to the outside panel so that these people wont try to charge me $200 or more for something i can do for a lot less. Do i need to install any special wiring? Right now i only have regular phone wire and im guessing its ok, but i'll probably replace it anyway because there is no telling how old it is. Can someone recommend a good wiring? Cat5 cable maybe? haha, I just want to make sure im ready for it when it gets here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

When my parents built their new house, I wired the entire house for telephone and ethernet in every room, and all I used was CAT 5. CAT 5 will support up to 4 phone lines, or one ethernet connection. And since you have approx 328' of length you should be able to hit everything in your house without any splitting. The more you split the connection, the more you decrease your overall bandwidth due to attentuation.
That's all you really need. Just remember to try to protect the CAT 5 if it has an extensive outdoor exposure to your box.

thank you. thats what i was wanting to hear it think. i was thinking about just using Cat5 as the "phone" line from the outside panel to my computer, but wasnt sure if it would be better or worse for it. I'll go ahead and plan on getting the Cat5 cable and running it. if anything it will help me with a little bit better speed since i wont have to use it thru these old phone lines which might hurt more than help. thanks again for the help.

Don't mix ethernet and phone over the same cable, even though the eight wires would permit it. Just string two ethernet cables and use one for the network and the other for phones.

I dont plan on using the phone on the wiring im going to run for the DSL. It will be a DSL only dedicated line. I plan to keep the same wiring i have for the phone lines because they are ok for that. i only have one computer that will be hooked up to DSL and plan to share the connection with the other computer by using 2 NIC cards in my win2k machine and running a crossover cable to the other computer like i have set up now. My main concern right now is that main line because i dont want the DSL line to have ANY problems getting to my computer. After being on 56K and waiting 2 years for a faster connection, i dont want anything to slow me down http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

The important thing is that the DSL line (from the frequency splitter to the wall jack near the computer) be a continuous cable run with no intervening connectors - and both ends would be RJ11, not RJ45, connectors.

Darrell, your on the right path and everything you said is correct, just keep to the plan and you will be fine.
Obenton, not sure you spent enough time reading my post. If you did, you would have realized what I said was correct and there would have been no need for your post.
First,
"I wired the entire house for telephone and ethernet in every room" - Keyword AND
Second,
"CAT 5 will support up to 4 phone lines, or one ethernet connection" - Keyword OR
Also, don't mix the term ethernet with the cabling. CAT5 and ethernet are two different things.
