System freezes when I get online, help!

Finally got DSL a few weeks ago and been having intermittent problems since...mostly concerning speed, but something new and more annoying has popped up.

Now when I get online it's almost guranteed that my connection will die within 15 minutes...and for whatever reason, when the connection goes, so does the computer. The entire system freezes up. I'm still able to move the mouse, but I'm unable to click on anything and not even ctrl+alt+del does anything. It seems to be connected to what I do with that time I'm online. If I just grab my email...I'm fine. But if I do something that requires some bandwidth (such as dl'ing a large file) that seems to kill the connection faster then anything.

Anyone got any ideas on what could be causing this? Is it possible I have a setting wrong in the Networks section of Control Panel?

I've called my ISP's tech support a number of times...and their "help" wasn't really all that helpful. Their advice for when you lose your connection is to reboot the computer. lol. Well that's about the only choice I have when the system freezes like it does. <sigh>

Anyways...thanks in advance for any suggestions you guys might have. :-)

Sounds more like a hardware problem. With a program bug issue you'd likely be able to terminate the program in Task Manager. What kind of NIC is it, and where is it installed?

heh heh...well I found the problem. Almost emberassed to admit this. lol.

You know the problems with the older file version of ndis.vxd? How it would lock up your computer, etc...well somewhere along the line, the older file got put on top of the newer one. <sigh>

I just happened to read about that...and when it describe my problem exactly, I thought, "Nah...couldn't be, I've already got the newer file". But when I checked the date...realized it was the older one.

Doh!

So everything's cool now. hee hee. Could have been a lot worse, definitely. lol
