For capture I use AVI_IO, and VirtualDub for rendering. VirtualDub can do linear editing, which means you can cut but not paste. What kind of stuff are you wanting to do?

I want to use my All in Wonder Video Card to record stuff straight off the cable input (such as Britney Spears appearances & Shania Twain music videos, etc), and then later edit out the commercials.

What do you think?

Sounds fine, what format will you be capturing in? The only trouble you might run into, is that ATI sometimes makes you capture in a propriatery format. If you can capture in your existing software, great. To edit out the commercials, I use vitrualdub which can also rerender your video and audio to different formats. I capture in MJPEG and render to mpeg4v2 video and mp3 audio. I can get an hour tv show (42min after editing commercials) into about a 550meg file.

It saves the file in .avi format, so I would like to have a .avi -> .mpg converter if anyone knows a free program for that too.

bbmpeg is a free mpeg converter, I'll have to find the url for it, I don't seem to have it bookmarked. Correction, you can download it here. http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/encoding.html#enc
