are you saying you want multiple computers to access the cable? i bought me a networking kit (a switch, two 15 feet of networking cable, and two network cards) for about $125 about a year ago. the best thing i would would consider is to get a Linksys cable/dsl modem along with a network cable and card for the other computer. im not sure if roadrunner charges for extra ips address but @home did. the router paid its self off in a year. plus its added secuirty for cable and DSL users. if you do decide to go the non router way you will need a switch or a hub. (i have a switch if your interested) http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Thing is I have to throw a laptop into the config as well. I might just run a dual NIC in may 1 gig t-bird and run a proxy threw that. Not quit sure though. Sysgate has some software that works well so I have heard. Just looking to keep a high speed access to multiple comps!

Is it true that ATT@Home doesn't allow routers and if they catch you using one they'll kick you off the service? I called ATT before I had my LAN installed and the guy on the phone told me that it's no problem using a router but then I asked him if using a router is slower than separate IP address then he asks the supervisor and the guy comes back to the phone and tells me that actually they don't allow routers and if they catch me using one they'll terminate the service from me. That is why each person with a networked computer in my home is paying for their own IP address with no router installed. Anybody here tell ATT that they're using a router and have the service terminated from them?

You know, this reminds me alot of the phone company when you had to report every phone you had hooked up, or the cable company when you had to report every TV in your house so they could charge you for the extras. I use @home and currently have 3 IPs. I use a 4 port switch and they still won't troubleshoot it, they tell you to hook one computer up directly to the modem. Asked what a switch could POSSIBLY have to do with the problem, but gave up quickly, you just can't argue with someone when they don't know what they are talking about to begin with. Anyway, I don't think they really care. I know of several people who use routers of various brands and have no problems what so ever. Well, except with Half Life and such (won't allow multiple connects from the same IP). When I move in a month, I am going to be buying the linksys 1 port router(less than $100 now) and dropping two IPs for the security if nothing else. I get so many probes I won't even leave my computer on anymore.
I have never heard of them canceling service on someone because they had sharing on, and from the number of posts in this forum, I would say 99% of the people posting here are using broadband of some sort and are sharing the connection across multiple computers. Correct me if I am wrong.

i have connected 3 computers in half life to the same online server all from the same cable connection with only one public IP address...and if you want straight answers from tech support it is best to argue your way up to teir 3 , game servers, file servers and webservers as long as they are personal in nature and dont sustain long periods of steady uploading.
