I installed the Millenium beta a week ago, and after crash testing, this skeptic is now a true believer. It has very little bloatware, and I can honestly say the Athlon runs about 15-20% faster in all apps, including gaming. The swap file is managed more effectively, and the restore-to-previous-system date function is a kick. Anyone else beta-testing it as well who want to compare notes?

A quick question: how many CPU will WinME recognise ?

Stan

how many? It's compatible with all CPU's currently on the market, from Pentiums to Coppermine's. Maybe I misunderstand your question. Will try Sandra on it next...

RC1 Was released May 6. Windows Millennium will be released on June 6.

This (http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/millennium.asp) should answer any quesions you have about Win Milllennium. It is based onthe 9X kernel and seems much faster and more stable than 98 was.

No dual proccessor support as mntsnow said.

Toadman I am currently running beta 3(build 2499) and love it. I had problems with beta 2 and had to do a reformat. I will be installing build 2516 when I get a chance to, I hope this weekend if I don't work. I hope they fixed the bugs in windows media player. I have problems playing cd's with it, the songs keep clipping while I have many things running in the background but Winamp plays the cd's with no problems.

RC0, RC1...semantics. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

jad1097, have you tried installing the WMP 7 beta? It's been out for about a week I think. The alpha sucked.

ME is not going to support multiple processors as it is the last of the win9x kernel coding. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif Thus if you want dual processors or greater you will have to upgrade to Win2K http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Which I have to say is "da bomb" http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Stan

Thanks, that's what I thought anyway... I just wanted to make sure...
Shame, I just installed a PIIIDME with 2 PIII 600E...

W2K is really good OS, but it still lacks some support for Promise FastTrack (and I can't be bothered to use the "workaround" solution)...
Keep checking Promise web site for drivers !

If I am correct it came with beta 3 of millennium. Or is it the alpha? I will have to check the next time I boot into mill.

I got the link from one of the posts here a while back. He seems to have all the info about upcoming windows stuff. I also try to wait till he does a review of betas before I install them.

Stan,
Have you looked at Promises website lately? They have a new bios and driver set that is supposed to work with Win2K http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I just did the "workaround" setup on my bp6 with a "hacked" Ultra66/fasttrak66 card and it rocks! Bdog has also done it and as far as I know he is loving the setup too http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Well, I've been searching Promise Web Site... can't find any BIOS to download...

Any idea where I could find one for the FasTrack33 (not 66) ??

Thanks a ton

Stan,
http://www.promise.com/techsupport/Notes/Install_fasttrak66_Windows2000_Driver130_workaroun d.htm for more information on how to do it.

Here is the link to the latest DRIVER
ftp://ftp.promise.com/Controllers/IDE/FastTrak66/BETA/FT66D130b21.zip

and here is the link to the latest BIOS
ftp://ftp.promise.com/Controllers/IDE/FastTrak66/BETA/FT66B130b2.zip

It is noted that you need to update the driver BEFORE flashing the BIOS. Both of the above links are for Win2K (and for use with a UNMODIFIED Card) If you are using a MODIFIED Ultra66 card you will want to use

for the BIOS

ftp://ftp.promise.com/Controllers/IDE/FastTrak66/BIOS/FT66b108.ZIP

for the drivers

ftp://ftp.promise.com/Controllers/IDE/FastTrak66/Win2K/Driver/FT66d114.zip

Again these are for Win2K

Mntsnow, if one day, you decide to go to London, let me know and I'll buy a pint a British beer... yum yum... (not as good as Belgian beer, though...)

Thanks

I noticed that all the links are pointing to a "FastTrack66" directory.
Maybe I'll send an email to Promise to see if I can use that BIOS for my FastTrack33... don't want to mess it up...

Stan,

Here is the Driver that is listed for the Fasttrak (33)

FastTrak ( DRIVER ) Win 2000 - Posted: 4/24/00 3:45:27 PM
Description: FastTrak33 Driver Version 1.20 build 14 (Update Driver First, then Flash BIOS)
FTPLink: ftp://ftp.promise.com/Controllers/IDE/FastTrak66/FT66d120.zip

If you look closely the file name is different from the 66 version.

I know this might sound like a stupid quest but are all of the 95/98 drivers going to work with ME ? Or are we going to have to wait for new drivers ?

Stan
05-12-2000, 06:15 AM
I installed Win 2000 on a RAID IDE PC at the office...
It works just fine ! I flashed the BIOS and used the beta drivers.

Next step is to try it at home !

Yes, all drivers for Win95/98 should work with WinME, but in the long run, Win2k is my choice, and I am not even going to bother getting ME.

One thing to precise for the FastTrak lovers:
if you have the FastTrak33, you can not flash the BIOS.
If you want a new BIOS, you need to call Promise and they will send you a new chip.
But, don't worry, you do not need a new BIOS. The beta drivers work just fine on their own !

Isn't life great ????
