Hehe, I am only 17, and live in Bellevue, a snobby rich community in Western Washington. The point is that a few of the computers we use could be considered supercomputers by some, and they cost tens-of thousands of dollars to buy. For instance we have 2 Xeon XU, these have Dual PIII Xeon 500MHz processors, 2mb of L2 cache, 512mb of RAM for the basics, we have 3 copies of Lightwave a $1000+ program (and it still runs slow on the Xeons), we have 1 dual PII 400 with 384mb RAM, and about 20 PIII 500s with 128mb RAM, If this isn't already enough, besides a T-1 line, this lab has a 726kbps DSL all to itself. The only bad thing about it is that the computers are so locked down you can't use them to their full potential! You can use the Xeons and the Dual PIIs to their full extent because of the demands of Lightwave. But al the other comps can't be used to their full potential. One more thing, the Internet has been locked down soo much so you can access only a few sites.
But don't you think that this setup is a bit excessive?

We are also trying to get one Dual PIII 733 with 1GB of RAM.

I know, I know, but these are not mine, hehe, they have low enough security that they could have been stolen long ago. But man, It's a waste of computing power, if our administrator would just loosen up a bit we could install games on it at the end of school and actually use these computers to their full potential. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
This is a school, remember?

BTW: WTP I would if I could. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif

WTP, I suggest a PIII 550e, those are some of the best processors I know. They can overclock to 750-800+ on the right mobos. I got a petty job and as soon as I've got enough for it I am getting it. They're about $200. I highly suggest it!

With my highest regards,

Got to agree on that... Bought a SL1 550E and she does 733 @ default voltage with the retail cooling package. She'll do 825 with a 7.5% increase in core volts - the 0.25micron can't touch that http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Dominus, the thing is, that we use lightwave, have you ever used that program before? it's a 3D animation/modeling program that was used to make 3D cutscenes like that of the intro to Star Trek: Voyager.

Hey, these computers are nothing like a Cray http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

No, not I, nor my school, can afford Lightwave, or the hardware it needs to run.

I, and many people I know would love to be able to use that program, but there are no funds with which to buy it.

In the meantime, we simply have to get by with (ugh...) CadKey and the P133s we run it on.

It amazes me that Canada has such high rates of taxation, and yet we don't reap anything as a reward. Nothing but more cutbacks.

You think that is a waste of money? My school spent so much on computers that in my English II class there are four computers each w/ PIII 450s and 3rd gen. DVD Drives sitting in the corner of the room collecting dust and have probably been used a few times.

XEONS?!?!?!?

IN A SCHOOL!?!?!?!?

Jeez. I'm a 17 year old netadmin for my school, and we have a ratio of 11 students to 1 computer, and on average, our systems are P133s with 48MB of RAM running NT 4.0.

The best systems we have are about a dozen Celeron 400s, and 3 P3 450s, one of which is the PDC/Fileserver.

I did an inventory of all our hardware for insurance purposes, and it's scary to see what the provincial government (Canadian) gives to one of its largest schools, and tries to pass it off as computers.

But, as long as I can snag a P3 450 when I have something to do, I'm happy.

Remember, he said this is Bellevue. And he certainly described that city to a "T". I know 'cause I use to live in Redmond and work in Bellevue.

Hey, We have that same kind of setup here at my school..Dual Xeons and all. Just not with the lightwave (some other high power software app.)

I find that we have the same problems.. Any games that are put on these systems, could easily be run by an old P100.. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif.

Dang guys! At my school we have a T-1 line that is shared with the whole school district!!!! I've heard from some of my friends (that use the internet connection for their webmastering class)that the connection gets too slow to do anything. And on top of that the webmastering class is the only class with internet capibilities besides the library. The best computers in the school are the PIII 450z that we have in my Technology Systems class. Yeah they sure don't act like Pentium III with only 64MB of RAM. They should of at least gotton them with 96 or something. We run this program called Pathways which i'm sure some of you have heard of. Oh yeah the best computer is not the Pentium III 450z but the Dell Poweredge Server that is the server of the computers in the Technology System class. If my teacher told me right, i think it's a Dual Pentium III 550 Xeon or maybe just Dual Pentium III 550. I can't remember what he told me http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. Anyways that's my school for you guys http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Our school's systems aren't too bad...
we have:
-(2) computer Labs with DELL PIII 550, 128MB RAM
-(2) "" labs w/DELL Optiplex GX1 PII 333, 32MB RAM
-(1) "Power Lab" with the newest G3 & G4 Power Macs, as well as other fast Apple Computers, and the new DELL PIII-based computers (this lab is a computer workshop for all of the teachers)
-(1) Pentium Lab which has DELL Pentium I 'puters w/32MB RAM
-Library has 4 Pentium I computers and 3 Celeron 400's (they're in for a serious upgrade next year!!!)
-Every classroom has atleast 1 computer (most are Tangent computers)
-We only have a T1 connection for the whole school, which will also soon change!
-Every Lab has atleast (6) Epson/HP (NEW) printers, (2) HP scanners, (4) Sony Digital Mavica cameras, (1) projector, (1) Power Mac G4, and a machine called "Casa Blanca" that's used to make movies

FOR NOW...but by next year we should have some serious upgrades!!!

And, I get the great job of managing all of the computers, it's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it!!
I can't take all of the credit...Mr.Duffy also works on the machines too, whenever I'm not their, ie. before 8AM, and after 4PM.

I'm building as much experience as possible, for that "BIG JOB" in just a few years!

Have a good one...

My school is the worst, most of the computers are out of date. There are 4 computer labs, two of these labs run on a coxial thinnet, and the other two, the newer labs have a 10 Base-T network. They cannot be connected together because the coxial labs run on Win3.1 !!!agggh, and the newer oned on Win95. There are about 50 486 SX25 with 4Mb ram each and Win3.1 in the two old labs running Win3.1, and the new labs are made up of Celeron 300 with 64Mb or 128Mb ram each. These run Win95. So, there are about 80 PC's for about 1200 pupils, which is 1 PC to 15 Pupils.
