If you have a defective i820 SD-RAM motherboard (posted earlier), then you might actually be lucky. Intel will replace your current i820 motherboard (with a defective MTH) and SD-RAM, with a brand new i820 and exactly the same amount of memory. But the new memory will be RAMBUS, not SD-RAM. Intel doesn't have an upgrade to a MTH-II chip yet, so they are supplying RAMBUS to fix the problem.

Here's an article for more information:
http://www7.tomshardware.com/blurb/index.html

First contact your motherboard vendor. If they can't provide you with help, call Intel's techincal support division. Some vendors will want to give you a VIA Pro133A replacement. It is upto you to decide whether to take it. If you want another Intel board, you are entitled to get an i820 and RD-RAM. Do not take a board with PC-600 RD, as it will actually be slower than your current board. Demand atleast PC-700, and try to get PC-800 if you can.

Many vendors are still in the dark about what's going on. Don't let them give you a problem, tell them to find out the official position from Intel.

Catch ya' later,

Dave, you think too much like me. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Let's do the math,

128meg SD-RAM = $100-150 US
128meg RD-RAM = $550-700 US

Look at the potential profit!!

Wow, you can get like 4 i820 boards in hopes of finding a defective MTH, and still make out on top if you find one.
PC600 RDRAM worse than PC133 SDRAM..who woulda thought?

Profit you say?
I bet if you put up 64MB or 128MB of RAMBUS up for sale in user to user, you wouldnt get any bites...

I know I wouldn't get any response here, but it's a different story with a couple of local computer shops. They are in the server market, and would gladly allow me to trade that RD-RAM for any number of products. Knowing this, I'm thinking that 128meg of good PC-800 RD-RAM could yield me 512meg of generic PC-133!

As for the PC-600, it is actually slower in most cases than even PC-100 Cas2. If someone offers you PC-600 memory, don't take it. PC-800 is the now the standard in RAMBUS.

I'm gonna get Rambus with my new system along with a 64mb DDR video card. I wanted some very new parts because I'm planning on keeping my comp for a while and want it (hopefully) to be able to play most of the latest games in 2-3 years.

The system comes with 128 but I'd love to have 256.

Anyone know if there are any comparision ratios of RDRAM/SDRAM? example: 128RDRAM = 256SDRAM

quick, somebody sell me their defective i820 mobo!!!!!!! hehehehe... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Even though RDRAM cost tonnes, even if you get your hands on a stick, you'll be hard pressed to find any mojos like us computer nerds willing to pay top bucks for it, especially when you know the price/performance ratio ain't all that great.

For personal use, its A-OK.
But for resale/profit, that's another story.

Just my 2 cents.
