Hey All
I recently got hold of a couple of fiber/twist duplexers,2 IEEE 802.3 FOIRL MAU/FIBER OPTIC TRANSCEIVER UNITS, some cat5 patch cords and about 20-25 feet of fiber-optic cable with TX and RX connectors on each end.My question is: How do I set up a fiber network between my two systems? Will I need more hardware like special Nics, hub, or switch or maybe just some software?
I currently have my two systems(Win98SE) networked with Linksys 10/100 nics and a crossover cable (30 ft).
Thanks for any help

Are the trancievers fiber in to wire out converters? If so, I would think you could run tx to tx, and rx to rx on the fiber side and run straight cable from the other side to your nic cards. You would have to run your nic cards in full duplex to use it in this way. I think this is probably greatly simplified in explanation,so it's just a thought to try to get the wheels turning. Mp

You need a LOT more equipment, and none of it is very cheap. You might want to stick with Cat5 and the 10/100 stuff instead.

Hey All
Thanks for the replies. I think I'll stick with what I have for now.
Thanks again.

A bill, when you say you need a lot more please list what else he needs. I have fiber in my network and he has the components for a basic fiber lay for the most part. Are you talking about going all out or what?

FYI, my fiber config: (I admit it is basic and it can get far more complex, but it works for a small LAN.

Unless you have some fiber NIC's available to you then it won't be worth doing on a LAN, I would only use for a WAN.

1. REMOTE LAN >
2. CAT5 >
3. SWITCH >
4. TRANSCEIVER >
5. MULTI-MODE FIBER >
6. TRANSCEIVER >
7. CISCO ROUTER >
8. SWITCH >
9. LOCAL LAN

Also, desmocat is right, all you need is to have tx to tx an rx to rx and straight cat5.
