To refresh your memory, see gwh. Could you go thru the proper settings for TCP/IP for me? I had and then I don't! Win98SE on both PC's. Roadrunner w/Toshiba cable modem, Linksys BEFSR41 Router.
After numerous TCP/IP configs and reboots I STILL can't get IT! When I do, I lose RR or vise versa. PLEASE assist!

If you just got the router and are adding it to your setup, with road runner, you may need to call tech support and give them the MAC address of the router's WAN input (what you hook the cable modem into on the router) or simply tell them you have a new network card. I believe it's printed on the bottom of the router.
If that isn't the problem, your client PCs should simply be set up to 'obtain IP address automatically' under TCPIP and all the real config is on the router. I'd go into more detail, but I am not familiar with detailed setup on this router. I have a netgear rt311, myself http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Basic idea:
Start by getting one machine working consistently with the Internet. Then do the second machine. Then solve any file sharing problems.
Does one (or both) computers work consistently with the Internet right now? What are their IP addresses?
DVNT1 - Yes Both PC's can connect to internetwith no problems. Its being able to SHARE FILES & PRINTER. Serveris: winipcfg report Host Name:Hinekn.hawaii.rr.com, DNS Server 24.25.277.34 & 24.25.277.36, Node Type Brodcast, IP Routing Enabled, PCI Bus Master Adapter- Adapter Address 00-A0-CC-E0-20-1B, IP Address 192.168.1.100, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway 192.168.1.1, DHCP Server 192.168.1.1 Client report is same except for: NO IP Routing, LinksysLNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter,IP Address 192.168.1.101 Server shows Hinekn as name & printer. When I click on Entire Network+Nothing Client shows Hinekn1 as computer &files, Click on Entire Network it also shows Mega-PS as workgroup.

File and print sharing don't use TCPIP.. You need to install client for microsoft networks, netBEUI, and client for file and print sharing in your windows network settings. Also make sure the login type is 'login for microsoft networks.

Actually Microsoft File & Print can work with TCP/IP.
A few more questions.
1) Is your router in GATEWAY mode or ROUTER mode?
2) What is your physical connection layout? As in, do both computers and the cable modem connect directly to the Linksys router?
(It sounds like you may have the cable modem on the PC, if so put it on the linksys' WAN port for best results.)

Dont forget to actually SHARE the printer/files... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Okay lets take it from the top. Server pings 192.168.1.101 (Client) 0%loss min=0ms max=1ms 32bytes sent. Client pings 1192.168.1.100 (Server) same results.
Workgroup=Mega-PS, Server Name =Hinekn, Client=Hinekn1
In Network Neighborhood on Server=Icon(Hinekn)click on it & it shows printer sharing.Icon Entire Network click on it it shows NOTHING.
In Network Neiboghrhood on Client=Icon(Hinekn1)click on it shows D: & files sharing. But neither PC shows the other! WHY?
For that matter, why isn't the workgroup shown on the Server like how it shows on the Client? When both PC's bootup they both show that logging on box and I hit Enter.

Since they ping each other then the Router VS Gateway settings is presumably right.
Try using a workgroup name of MEGA
(I don't know that hypen could cause a problem but let's keep it simple for now.)
Which computer has the MASTER BROWSER=ENABLED ?
[This message has been edited by DVNT1 (edited 12-20-2000).]
The Server (Hinekn) has the browser Enabled.
As I mentioned earlier, Niether PC sees the OTHER! Also, the Server does not have the workgroup (Mega-PS). Yet the Client DOES. I would like to have the PCs SEE EACH OTHER as well.

"...why isn't the workgroup shown on the Server like how it shows on the Client?"
I don't know what that really means. If you have changed the workgroup (on both computers) as I suggested then I don't understand why its not working. I have used several "only IP" networks and the MS File/Print sharing was fine.
At this point try adding the NETBEUI protocol and ensure File/Print Sharing is bound to it (on both computers).
If you still have a problem, then switch the Master Browser to the other computer.
If it still doesn't work then try removing file/print sharing, reboot, add it again, reboot, shared resources again (both computers), set the Master Browser setting again, then reboot.

THANK YOU DVNT1.
I'll try that scenario and let you know the outcome. Do I keep the TCP/IP too? or just use NETTBEUI? Once again, thank you for your assistance!

If you mean should File/Print Sharing should be kept bound to TCP/IP too? Either way for now.
If you get it working then one File/Print Sharing binding should be removed to help understand what really fixed the problem.
[This message has been edited by DVNT1 (edited 12-20-2000).]
I'm not sure what was WRONG, but by simply adding NETBEUI and leaving everything else as it were, including TCP/IP it IS NOW ABLE TO SEE EACH OTHER INCLUDING WORKGROUP on Server! Files & Printer is able to SHARE! Rather then take the chance of losing it again, I'll just leave it ALONE for now. Although I'd like to know what was the TRUE PROLEM!

I realize the IP addresses seem right, but can both computers ping the other by IP address or do they time out?
If they ping successfully then this needs rechecked...
1) Ensure File & Print Sharing is allowed on both PCs. It should be bound to TCP/IP for the NICS by default, but this is important)
2) On the File & Print Sharing Properties, Enable one PC to be the Master Browser and disable it on the other.
3) Set both PCs to the same workgroup name (make it simple like a last name).
4) On both PCs, right click on a folder to be shared and select Sharing, defaults are fine.
5) When the computer boots up, do not Cancel nor hit Escape to bypass the Microsoft Network logon. At least have a user name entered and hit enter.

Glad it works now, but I sure don't understand why it didn't work with TCP/IP. Perhaps it is more unrealiable with that protocol than with NETBEUI (which may of been jamis's experience).

Yeah.. I've had NO experience getting it working with TCP/IP...never even tried. Until you mentioned that it could be done, I never even concidered the idea, actually. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
