I recently signed up for @home and I notice that they scan port 119 on machine several times a day. Any ideas why? Also I get my IP via dhcp. So far it hasn't changed. I have rebooted several times and I always get the same one. Do I keep the same IP forever, or does it change like once a month or something?

Hey bdog
Those are "authorized security scans" done by @home for newsgroup abuse...119 is the news port.
Nothing to worry about...unless you are running an unauthorized server..

Oh, and welcome to a static IP....it should stay the same..

Thanks for the reply. I thought it was the newsgroup port but I wasn't sure. I am not running a news server, but I have them blocked anyway. I just don't like people scanning me. I think it is an invasion of privacy.

I will tell you as I was told is a similer post I made several months ago, I do not mean to offend you in any way but I am just trying to repeat what I was told the way I remember it.

It is their port and they have every right to scan it. They are just checking for servers so do not worry about it. If everyone had severs running it would reduce the amount of bandwidth.

THe IP stays the same, at least mine has exept when I moved.

BTW what do you think of it?

I don't like my @home cable modem all that much anymore. :/ It's just not stable. I still can't play an online game of Starcraft without having to be dropped because my packets keep getting lost...tech says "router problems", they STILL have router problems after 4 months? Give me a break. The constant port probes(mostly not from @home) from wanna be hackers are a nuisance. And to top it off, I can't run a server which = cannot host a Q3 or a UT game! So I'm going to look into Bell's ADSL high speed connection when it's available here. I must admit cable modem is great WHEN it works though.

I am happy with @home for the most part. It has been very fast, and I have not had any connectivity problems. However this scanning does bug me. I don't feel that it is there port. It is on my machine. My machine is connected to the internet through their service, but I pay quite a bit per month. I understand that they do not want people running servers as this takes away from the service that they provide to others by wasting bandwidth. I have no problem whatsoever if they monitor how much bandwidth I use, and contact me if it becomes excessive. This is the only thing they should be monitoring of mine imho. These scans are very frequent as well. I get scanned by them at least a dozen times a day. I have heard others talk about this as well. Talk about wasting bandwidth.
