72hz is the optimal refresh.Anything above this is easy on the eye.

I just changed my adapter refresh rate from default to 60Hz. My Intel i740-854 8MB video card supports up to 85Hz. But with my screen resolution set at 800x600 with a Vesa38k Display mode it seems my monitor will only suport 60Hz.

Just wondering if this is right. And what is a default refresh rate and how does it compare to a setting of 60Hz? In other words, which setting is best?

Thank you http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I didn't look at the URL posted previously yet, so it may have answered your question. Regardless, it's likely that your monitor does not support the resolution at that particular refresh rate.

I looked :-) Nice site Nathan.

Thanks Nathan and Envy.
Nathan, the info on your site tells me my monitor pretty much sucks. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif It offers 12 "factory preset modes" And only a few offer refresh rates over 70. Oh well, live and learn.

Well look at it this way, when you're ready to buy the new monitor, you'll know what to look for, won't you?
