Yes, I'm the last guy in America on a dial up connection, or at least I feel that way. This is Time Warner cables answer to cable Internet service. DSL is my first choice but it is not available here and won't be until late 4th quarter. I was hoping to get some thoughts on the quality of this service good or bad before I have to decide between DSL and cable ( neither of which are currently available)

go with DSL, not only is it a secure line (you own it, not share it), it will not slow down on you, and you get to use your fone at the same time. Cable will slow you down if too many are on. The only thing you need for DSL is a modem, ethernet card, and RJ45 lines. Cable is not too complicated, but the part where it slows you down isn't good.

Hey,

I'm running road runner here in the twin cities and am VERY happy with it. To use blanket statements like "cable sucks and dsl rulez" is the same as saying chevy sucks and ford rulez, it dependes on the specific chevy! I know guys who are buying DSL from one provider thats Half as fast as my road runner and doesnt stay connected at twice the price, and have another friend on the other side of town with another cable provider, and he can only do 1/4 what I can do at the same price, cause they are running 2700 users off only 3 t1's and his node is saturated. Just like all networks there are MANY variables that determine the final speed of the end user. I suggest that you try to see if any of your nieghbors are running the cable and ask if they might demo it for you,<people love to show off, they probably will> and that will give a good idea of what you can expect. I consistantly get a 1 Megabit+ connection, and the service is rock solid. I have heard some guys getting 8 Meg connect on this board and can only be jealous, but still am very happy. As far as security is concerned if you think that DSL is bulletproof your dead wrong. First off NOTHING is secure, if someone really wants you, they can get you, second there are nightmare cable stories of seeing people on your node in network neighborhood, but they are few and far between and ushally due to poorly configured headend at your ISP. And finally if you are worried about security I suggest you run a firewall, a FREE and sweet one is avail at: www.zonelabs.com (http://www.zonelabs.com)
Just remember blanket statments on something as complex as a network can not be accurate, check it out for yourself and get the truth.

Good Luck

Cable modems are awesome! DSL would cost me more and it will not even come close to the speeds I can download at sometimes. I almost always get downloads faster than 500kbps.
Her is a sample of what I get on a regular basis. http://www.geocities.com/jad1097/images/smokingdnl.gif
I also agree with what hellcat stated about the security issues.

I am with @home and they seem to have some problems with their email service but other than that I am pretty happy.

I am happy with road runner. I've had it for about 2 years now and have noticed the decrease in speed, but it is still faster than my parents DSL and cheaper too.

Road Runner here, also. Just checked my speed, using Fred Langa's Browser Tune 2K, at winmag.com: 384kbs avg., network heavily congested right now. BTW, Zone Alarm rocks!

i have roadrunner, and it just came to the area here. my peak bursts on downloads come close to a megabyte a second, and average speeds aroun 300-400 kilobytes per second. i used DU meter to get these results. I have no problems whatso ever with the service and have never had asecurtiy problem either. I have been told that my neighborhood is served by a T3, so it is not likely that i will see any slowdowns anytime soon either...

i can use roadrunner, but DSL is better, just buy a modem, and some RJ45s, get freeDSL coverage, and you have free DSL! why pay 39.95 a month if you can just buy a modem (ethernet card, dsl modem, and some RJ45 lines) for more info go to http://www.freedsl.com or you can stick with cable.

Free DSL is not free from what I have read.YOu still have to pay the phone company line rental or something.

FreeDSL is for internet only, you still have to pay the telco the line charge (the majority of the cost in most cases). If you live in Pacbell or Swbell territory, you can get DSL for 39 bucks (they are waving the internet charge anyway), plus free install and modem. Cable is better in many places, but I chose DSL here in Houston because I know many people who had lousy service with the cable provider. All a matter of where you are and what kind of network each provider has built.
