My Home Lan is very slow when openning Network Neighborhood and trying to browse the shares. Copying is ok i can say, what really bothers me is the time it takes to open the shares in the client computers.

I have an NT 4.0 Server, a Win98 machine and a WinMe. My network speed is 100mps The Nt server is a 200mhz with 48mb of edo ram and a 4.3gb hardrive which is more than enought. The Winme Computer is a Custom Built 800mhz Piii with 256mb and 30gb hd and the win98 is a 450mhz with 128mb and 13gb hd. I only use the server for internet sharing and vpn. When browsing the shares in the NT server is fast it takes like 1 sec to display the contents of what ever i want, but when using the Winme and Win98 machine it can take up to 3 minutes before it gives me the Domain name, another 5 minutes to display the Computer names and another 5 minutes to open a share folder but copying is fine.

Protocols running are TCP/IP, IPX/SPX and NETBUI.

Another Problem I have is If i try to host an ipx game in the Winme Machine the server won't see it or viceversa. But if i vpn to the server with only ipx then I can be able to see the game. Also if my friend VPNs to me and I host a game using ipx on the Winme Machine he can't see me but if I host in the Server He can see it and I can see it but if he joins I can't join. He can browse my shares and I can't browse him as well as ping him.

Thank you guys!@@

as for your first question. I have always led myself to believe that the fastest machine you have on a network. should be your server ect.

other wise the faster machines ect. that are working and pulling from your server. will pull it down even more trying to server them.

of couse this is only my outlook and the way I do things. others may know better or have a better answer to your problem ect.
