KINGSMAX ethernet/fast ethernet adapters, 5 metres of that crazy blue stuff you use to connect both cards.
win98se osystem on both
both intels, one 350, other 550
Just set up my first network...but I can't even get the computers to see each other.
I installed all the correct protocols. Set up the address/subnet mask on both. Installed the gateway on both computers[in tcp/ip adapter] Went through -step by step- all the settings i needed from the www.homepclan.com (http://www.homepclan.com) intro to networking site....and STILL i can't get it to work
what else can i do?
a possible compatibility prob?
p.s checked device manager in both comps, adapter is running ok
and i also pinged each computer....it can find itself but timesout when i try to search for the other computer
any help would be truly appreciated

chech to make sure you have a crossover cable and that it is good.

Are they cross-over cables or patch cables? The cables "look" the same, but a patch cable won't work unless your using a hub. Look at the connectors carefully, you should be able to tell if it is a Patch or Cross-Over.

Did you solve your problem? I have the same problem- my two computers will not recognise each other. According to the label I do have a crossover cable.

Try using NetBEUI as your network protocol instead of TCP/IP and see if the computers connect. NetBEUI is extremely simple to network with.

Definately make sure you have a X-over. As was said earlier you can look at each end and tell. I have bought many a cale labeled a X-over that were really just Patch cables. Sometimes they just get maked incorrectly. Also are you using IP's in the range of 192.168.xxx.1 - 192.168.xxx.254. These are some IP's that are not internet routable and reserved for home networks. Sorry just finished reading that you are using the correct IP's. Be sure to check the cable though.
