Is a MAC address specific to the hardware on a machine or does it relate to an ISP or something similar.

The MAC address is specific to your NIC..supposedly each is unique...

Other devices have a mac address as well. But yes it is hardware specific and all are "unique" It helps to trouble shoot problems if you know the mac address of the confilcting devices.

Here is the breakdown.

6 byte or 48 bit hex number.

First 3 bytes are Vendor code, so all intel cards should have identical 24 bit values up front, and the last three bytes are akin to a serial number for that vendor.
