I'm getting a DVD player but I'm a bit confused about the differences between software and hardware decoding. (obviously hardware is done on a peripheral card and software is probably done by the cpu.) What I want to find out is...
1) My Voodoo 3 says it does software DVD decoding, but it comes with a 'send away' for an add on decoder. Is that a hardware decoder? Then what does the V3 actually do (decoding wise)?
2) I'm looking at the Creative DVD 6x. This comes with a decoder card. Would that card be better than trying to use the V3? You see I want to be able to utilize the V3's TV out and the Creative DVD specs says it doesn't have TV out. Should I be looking at another brand DVD? Any recommendations? I greatly apreciate any light someone might be able to shed on this subject for me. Thanks!

Are ya sure the creative decoder does not have tv out? my 5x dxr2 card does.Creative drives are said not to work with other decoder cards only their own.Not sure how true this is,But is a statement I read somewhere on the creative site.Maybe they mean the decoder wont work on anything but creative drives not sure here.Any ways, hardware decoding usually is easier to set up and gives a better performance without a big hit to to the processor.Xing makes a pretty good software decoder from what I have read here.I am pretty sure that the v3 can only do software decoding,The ati rage pro is able to do full hardware decoding and is not a bad card just needs some better drivers.
