why do you care? are any of you guys terrorists?? if you are, don't use email. how many illegal things do you guys use email for that you're worried the government might find out about? if you have nothing to hide, why hide it?

Its just all about privacy and letting them stick their foot in the door. Imagine if they sent someone to live in your house and watch you, are you still going to say "I am not doing anythign illegal, so let them watch me." There is nothign inherantly bad with this small step, but it can only lead to more loss of rights on the individuals side....and I live in America, what do I care about what goes on over there http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

mattheadfat, I think you are missing the point, if we let this go then whats next? Its not that we are doing something illegal, its that those our private and personal messages. And do you really think they are going to ask permition before checking a few emails.

If we have nothing to hide... then we shouldn't care if the police come and search our house whenever they want right? I know this is extreme but it's the same thing.

grrrr it's just trying to legitimise Echelon.
It's pretty obvious that it now works, so instead of going public with "we've been watching you for years", they are saying "we're building a cool state of the art station to tap all those evil terrorists and stop all those evil hackers like those that made the loveletter virus" (oops forgot to mention we made that)

At the moment this is not the threat. It is the RIP bill. You will go to jail for not disclosing your encryption keys to the police, regardless of whether you actually have any incriminating evidence encrypted.
The police, security services and Home Secretary, and ANYONE authorised by them can intercept your communications. If anyone tells you that you are being watched, they can go to jail.
They are not obliged to tell you.

And you guys thought UCITA was bad.

mattheadfat, you really should start asking "what is the matrix?"

"He forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name." Rev. 13:16-17 NIV

"Nearer now than when we first believed."

Are we headed for TOTAL governmental control?

No, its all about money. Government beauracrats need to justify bilking the taxpayers and keep their relatives in cushy jobs.

Surely, they know that no terrorists would openly say, "Hey Achmed, lets bomb the parliament..." Instead, perhaps they'll ask about "fishing" in the english channel. In addition they'll probably be using encryption.

if you have an love letter to your mistress and encode it, you have to make it public if this Bill goes through Government, or MI5 can trace what your up to, any one has the right to brake into your house and you can't defend yourself even when out number with a shoot gun, no more an English Man home is his castle, they tax them to Hell ( 17.5% on every thing they buy for a computer) and thats after paying the IRS their dues, more and more UK is becomeing a slave state to keep a Government ( no matter which party) living it up at the peoples expense, time the people used the wall for this lot before they all lose their rights and freedom http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

Yeah - America may not be far behind at this point, but it was not always like that - seems to me colonists got a little tired of being taxed British style and had a little "tea party."

Don't look now but "The Redcoats are coming!"

This news is terrible and I see nothing good about it. Echelon, indeed.

How far away can it be before this type of government control trys to spread its electronic tentacles to everyone.

This is the same thing (IMO) as some goon-spook intercepting a flesh and blood mailman, taking his bag and ripping open your mail - anyone's and everyone's mail. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

It will happen in America, just wait and see. There are too many people like mattheadfat in this country that will let this **** happen. The people who don't care will be our downfall. Why is it that so many people will allow this to happen? These peoople in government are no different than you and me, they just think that they are superior. They have no right, regardless of the laws to spy on their own citizens. This whole planet gets closer to forgetting what democracy and freedom are all about a little every day. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

So you are required to provide the key, so just tell them you lost it. You are not refusing to comply you are unable to. So what are they going to do then?

This is realy bogus. If a terrorist encrypts an email which is intercepted what then? "Please Mr. Terrorist what is the key?" Oh yeah right!

U-96
05-09-2000, 05:55 AM
THAT'S EXACTLY THE POINT!!!!!

"Innocent until proven guilty" is the basis of the legal model used in free and democratic countries!!!

Now YOU have to prove you lost, forgot, etc the key.
THEY don't have to prove that you have it. Therefore, you go to jail if you can't prove that you don't have the key. And just how do you go about proving it?

Note that this is IRRESPECTIVE of whether there is anything criminally indicting on your encrypted data.

Charge: Failure to disclose encryption keys to authorised parties in process of investigation. Sentence: two years.

And depending how much you annoyed them add:
Withholding evidence
Obstructing police in an investigation
Contempt of court
Terrorism
and, when they eventually find nothing on your data, wasting police time.

Sometimes I wonder who really won the war...
