I recently bought a networking kit and have connected three PCs on a hub. I have succeeded in establshing file and printer sharing perfectly, and all computers are on the network.

However, I have two problems:

1) I cannot share my cable connection. All PCs use Win98SE, and I use ICS. It is configured correctly, because the little icon on the task bar dispalys that "three pcs are using cable connection". However, when I try to browse the Internet from a pc that is not directly connected to the cable modem, I cannot. It loads the homepage of the ISP, all other pages belonging to the ISP, but cannot load pages like yahoo or hotmail dot com. What is wrong?

2) I cannot play multiplayer games on the network. In fact, the only game I have succeeded is Quake 2, and this was done by running the game from ONE machine (so all machines are actually reading one installed version and do not have the game installed on each machine). I'm getting pretty anxious, since I have installed the IPX protocol, but still cannot play games like Starcraft, Diablo, Diablo 2, etc. In fact, I cannot play any game that uses IPX. What can be the reason behind this? How am I supposed to correctly run the games?

Please help me solve the above problems.

Thanks a lot for reading,

Hey guys, I solved my first problem. I found the problem being that f**king ICS did not install any proxies, and the ones installed were configured wrong, so I had to go oiver and do it manually. Anyhow, now the Internet Sharing works perfectly well.

I only need an answer to the question on IPX and network gaming... Please help me out http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks,

All I can say is check your frame type. IPX/SPX,NWlink are depedent on frame types especially older versions of Netware. Try manually entering all frame types.

Mike,
thanks alot for the advice, but it doesn't seem to solve the problem...

I can still NOT play any games that use IPX.

I was wondering...

What CLIENT should I use to setup the network? It works fine now, but maybe I have a problem there? I am a newbie in networking, so I don't even know where to look at http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

Could you guys tell me what client I sould setup for a 3 pc network where no login passwords are needed? And PLEASE help me out on the IPX problem I have. It drives me crazy...

Thanks,

Create your user accounts with a password, then change the password to nothing. This way all you will have to do is enter in the username to gain access to the network.

Due to the nature of networking, and the inherent need for security in the networking design model, you cannot eliminate usernames.

IPX - ther is also a chance that your IPX drivers did nto install correctly. Go into the control panel networking icon and delete the network adapter, reinstall the drivers and reconfigure the network settings and run from there. If you have other protocols installed you would still have communication in your network via those other protocols.

Also make sure that NetBIOS is installed. Perhaps the game was written to use NetBIOS OVER IPX for communication. This is often an expected configuration for other IPX dependent software.

I would also check the web page of the game manufacturer - I suspect that this would be a FAQ there.

ctaylor,

thanks for the advice. I will try to do what you suggest. However, I found something that can be the reason of my troubles:

On the pc that is connected to the internet (pc#1) I have two Network cards. One for the internet connection (cable) and one for the internal network. However, no IPX driver is installed for the internal NIC and when I try to install it, it says something that my license only allows four IPX to be installed or something. It installs one for the cable NIC, two dial up adapters, and one more I can't remember right now. HOW ON EARTH CAN I MANUALLY INSTALL IPX FOR THE SECOND NIC??????
I think that I am going to "switch" the NIC places so that the internal card is recognized FIRST, so it gets the protocol. But I would love to know if there is a "software" way to deal with this problem.

Nevertheless, pc2 and pc3 have IPX installed on the internal NIC (only one available on these pcs anyway) but they can still NOT play games.

I am completely lost here and it seems there's no real solution to my problem... I will try to reinstall the NICs and see if that works. If it doesn't I don't know what I have to do...

I'll let you guys know what's happening.

Thanks all for your help http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

You wont be able to play IPX games over the internet, the internet only supports TCP/IP.

The only way to run IPX games over the net is to use point-to-point tunnelling protocol and then establish and IPX link through the PPTP connection.

Jez,

I am not trying to play IPX games on the net. I am trying to play IPX games over my LAN. Is this possible? I guess it is, because the game itself looks for IPX...
