Just bought a P11 400, It did not come in a box with paper work just a cpu. Got it from a shop. It does not say anywhere on the cpu that it is a 400 how can I check that it is for sure a 400 and not a 350 dressed up in wolves clothing

Look at the top of the PII case and find the part number. It will start with SL, then go to this web site and find the number that matches yours and click on the link to see the Intel Specs. on your part.

Besides that, since intels are multiplier locked, when you plug it in a BX board, if it has soft BUS menu it will detect it automatically. If it has jumpers, then setting the BUS at 100Mhz should be enough. If it is a 400Mhz cpu it will run at that only.
At least to my knowledge, the multiplier lock is not beaten yet, which is why you cannot pass a 350 cpu for a 400. it might work with a 300 to 450 changing the bus from 66 to 100.

open ur case.. look at the outside top of the chip.. it will give you a bunch of numbers then a 400512 that tells u the cpu speed and the cache size.. also on the XEON chips they have those numbers.. too..
