I just installed a laptop with Win98SE and I want to connect it to a few printers on the print server. Although the drivers for Win98 are installed on the printers/print server for the printers that I want to create I get the following error message -

Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied -

I checked MS's support knowledgebase and the exact problem is at this link -
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q233/3/13.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0

None of the information on this page or the pages that are linked to it seem to help me. Does anyone have any ideas for getting around this without eliminating shares on the server?

The server is NT 4.0. The laptop is Win98SE.

Did you install the printers on the laptop

i did not install the printers on the laptop. i never have done that on any of the other laptops/desktops. i just go into network neighborhood, open the printer server and double click on the printer that i want to use and windows sets it up from there. if that doesn't work, as has been the case with some win9x machines, i've gone to the run command and typed in the path to the printer and that's worked fine (\\printserver\printername).

Let's start iwth the basics.......

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printers?

perhaps there was a bad write to your notebook due to net congestion, power browning, a bad sector or something like that.

I would try again.

Mabey I am not answering the right question but when I usually set up a network printer where I work I go to "start menu\settings\printers\add printer" then select "Network printer",choose the printer on the server and follow on screen instructions.

Does this help?
