Where can you buy a cable modem?

Does anybody know where you can purchase cable modems online? I have my reasons for not buying thru my local cable provider.

I called my local cable provider and they gave me a list of stores that carried the cable modem for sale cheaper than the cable company offered.

After using the modem for 2 years, I offered to purchase the cable modem from the cable provider (cox) for half price, they refused and wouldn't cut any deal.

I dont buy stuff on line very often but when I do this is how I find what I want.

try going to www.excite.com (http://www.excite.com) or www.yahoo.com (http://www.yahoo.com)
or any of the othere search engines and where it says search type in Cable modems
and hit the Enter key.
it should give you a big long list

Just make sure that you get one that is APPROVED and guaranteed to work with your cable provider.

I got a US Robotics model 2940 for $60 off of Ebay. And yes it is one that my cable company uses. Most cable companys use the DOCSIS interface.

I think that's what I'm going to have to do (e-bay). I would have wanted to buy a new one, but I havent been able to find anyone who sells them. The local cable company (Cablevision) distributes them thru The Wiz. I went in to The Wiz to buy one, but they wouldn't sell it unless you signed with Cablevision for the inernet access service. It makes me wonder whether the cable companies have the distribution channels locked up. I think Cablevision actually owns The Wiz. I can't believe how hard it is to find one of these things on your own. They can't be found in the local computer superstores like CompUSA or Micro Center, and I haven't even been able to locate a reseller online. I even called 3Com and that is one item you cannot buy direct. Go figure.
