Anyone out there built a car Mp3 player yet?
Great fun, see how many old bits you can put to use, lol.
A friend is building one now, using a 1 unit 19" repeater case and a dell pentium m/b, the advantage to the Dell board is onboard everything but cache, the bad thing is cache module too tall to fit in case, lol. We managed to cram a Dell p/s in to that thin case with a few slight mods, to simplify power and used an inverter. Presently he is trying to fit a 2x16? lcd into the keypad for the setup. Maybe when he finishes, I'll post some pics? My role in this is advice only, lol, 'cause i think a cheap laptop a better plan.
Joel is making a car MP3 player as we speak. HOw is it coming along Joel?

I heard that Aiwa is building a car cd player that will convert MP3's. In other words you can burn MP'3 without converting to wav to a cd and play em in your car.
That means 10x the music on a cd.

Yes, they and several others are working on an in car mp3 player. They had two at this years CES, and one used memory cards, and the other cd format.

One of Kenwood's eXcelon series cd players will play mp3 cd's and also rockford fosgate is making an mp3 changer that changes memory cards (think compact flash) that can be used with their cd changer capable head units. Crutchfields latest print catalog talks a little about the Kenwood changer, although I couldn't find it on their webpage last week.

The problem for me with the Mp3 head units is the high price.

I believe that I read that Blaupunk(sp?) is going to release a head unit that will play mp3 cd's this summer.
Anyhow a portable cd player was just released that plays mp3 cd's and it is only about $100. I will most likely be getting one before I move back to Florida so I do not have to change cd's very often. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/006112.html
I was going to post the same link as Szech after seeing it in an add on napigator. I have to say that buying a $300 awia in june seams like a more pratical idea. Building your own is still very cool though! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

The beauty of building it is the customization that comes into play. It's going to act JUST like I want it with exactly the features I want (assuming I can get it working).
LIRC - Linux infrared remote drivers (though there is still no lircmd.conf file for it so in order to use the pad as a mouse, you'll have to write a .conf file for it (I just don't have time or the inclination http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif). http://fsinfo.cs.uni-sb.de/~columbus/lirc/
For windows drivers, Do a search or check out www.windrivers.com (http://www.windrivers.com) for "Packard Bell infrared remote drivers" or some other combination of the above. They are out on the net - I'm pretty sure I've downloaded them before.

I simply connected to my aux in on my cd head unit, drilled a small hole to pass the mini-connector into my unused ashtray...NOW when I want MP3 I just toss my Rio 300 in the ashtray and GO...no I dont have 2 weeks of continuous play but for 3$ it works ok for my needs...
