We have Win2000 Professional installed on a couple of test machines. We manually mapped some drives on them and everything seems fine for a little bit until all of a sudden in My Computer or Explorer the drives show the red x indicating that the drives no longer are connected. When we double click on the drive it opens and we can get into the resource just fine and then when we go out of it the drive is displayed normally. A little bit later, after not using the drive for a while, the red x comes up again. What's up with that?

What might have happened is at some point the mapped drive's computer has been shutdown or lost it's network connection which would have caused the "share" to have been lost. When you clicked on it, it re-established the connection and thus gave you the connected share icon.

sounds reasonable, only the problem continues even after re-establishing the link to the mapped drive. after a certain amount of time of the drive not being used the drives just disconnect. it's weird.

here's an idea... Do you have power management shutting down the hard drives on the other machines after periods of non-use? That might be triggering the lack of connection after no activity.
Check the settings and set them to never... If they already are, nevermind... Len

Hi,
Athough I believe DarthLen's suggestion is much better than mine check also this. In order 2000 Pro to co-operate with NT 4.0 Server you need to istall SP6a to the serrver. Have you done it. Maybe it is related to the problem.
Just a wild guess...
