Ive been trying to get the Win98SE to connect to the Win2k machine to read files.
The other way works fine, but I get permission denyed when i try to connect to win2k machin thru the WIn98se machine.
I have the drives shared and read checked, and change unchecked for 'everyone' group...what am I doing wrong?

Hmmm maybe that's why I cannot get Win2K to see mine either. I use Admin all the time...

Sorry didnt tell you where ...
Go into the control panel then choose Users & Passwords....Then Advanced TAB...Then Advanced User Management....Then click on the User folder then GUEST and right click...choose Properties and there you will see that the guest account is disabled Untick it and you will be off to the races (as long as you did set up your drives/folders for sharing already)

You need to enable the GUEST account on the Win2K machine as it is set to disabled by defaut on install.

Create new drive shares in win explorer, call them anything you like, and click the box that grants access to "everyone".

OK, I strongly recommend that you DO NOT enable the guest account on your computer. This is a HUGE open door to hackers and practicaly anyone could log in. I once made the mistake of enabling the Guest account on my NT 4.0 computer and a couple days later I noticed the bandwidth was going through the roof.... to my amazment there where 4 unknown computers connected to mine "stealing" files from me!!! Hackers!
Instead make an account with the same specs as your win98 system login (that way win2k knows who is logging onto the network), use the client for microsft networks (98), enable all the permissions and you will be set! The guest account is disabled for a good reason!

I believe 'everyone' permission would be safe with a good firewall.
Enabling specific accounts is really a pain when you go to a LAN party..
I havent been to one in about 2 months tho, which is kinda why I let this topic die in the dust. I've since sold my Win98 machine for $$$ and kept my Win2k machine, and made it dual boot with WIn98, since I figured I cant work on 2 machines at once anyways.

I would also go ahead and create a user name for the 98 login on the 2k machine. Enabling the guest account will work, but if you are going to use 2K in a network environment, you might as get accustomed to user/permission issues.

How does one set up these user accounts? I see all the computers on my network but my 98se machines can't get access to the 2k one (needs a password to enter ipc$). I tried adding users to the 2k machine but didn't work. Sorry, new to Win2K

ok, here is what to do... you first need to make sure that all drives on all computers are shared, not just for admin purposes but for other logins too...if you need too, create a new share for that drive. once you do that, you need to make accounts under (control panel, admin tools ,computer manager, then local computers and groups.) make sure that the logins (name and password) for all the 98 machines have maching accounts on the 2k machine.
so... for example, i have 3 98se machines and 1 win2k... that means i had to add 3 accounts to my 2k machine so that each computer has permission to log into my 2k computer. hope this helps

You can also use the Users and Passwords icon in the control panel if you are using a domain model and logging on to a domain controller. Leaving the domain space blank will create a local user account.

Another easy way to use shared resources on your Win2k machine is to logon to your Win98 machine with the same user name that you used to logon to your Win2k box. I have a small peer to peer network in my home and this method works fine for me.
