I understand it is possible to have an ICS client dial-up without the host being logged on first. I am having some trouble with that.

At this point the host internet programs will initiate the dial-up connection. All except IE5.01. On the client none of the internet programs will activate the dial-up connection on the host. Other than this the network appears to be working fine.

Both machines are running W98SE. NETBEUI and TCP/IP are installed with file and print sharing enabled for NETBEUI but not TCP/IP. I thought file/print share needed to be installed for TCP/IP but that was no help.

How do I get the host IE5.01 to activate the DUN connection? Then how do I get the internet programs on the client to activate it on the host?

Under Tools-Connections for IE5.01 the host is set to "always dial. . . " while the client is set to "never dial. . . ". I tried the client on the "dial if no network connection. . ." but that was also no help.

Any suggestions? Or an obvious solution I have missed?

I am not an expert on this, but use a similar setup. I do not think that you can initiate the dial up proceedure from the client. My understanding id that you have to dial from the server and get the web online, then you can surf from the client. Why IE5 will not initiate the dial up procedure, try going to Internet Option, (right click the icon and go to properties) go to connetion and hit the connect button. run through the procedure again. Whis I could help more.

As far as I know it is not possible for the client to connect the server to the internet.
Although if you surf with the client and disconnect the server from the internet it will reconnect.
Another question what do you have to do to give the client a fixed IP. Mine won't go on the internet (the server works fine with a fixed IP).

I got it. I think the main problem that I was not allowing enought time for the connection to be dialed through the server. IE initially says the page is unavailable but once the connection completes I have access. This is all without having to dial the connection from the server. I'm much happier now that I have that solved.

IE host is set as "Dial Default" and the client is set to "Never Dial. . ." and then you use the Connection Setup to set up the client on a LAN connection instead of DUN. The disconnect is done by setting the time-out under the modem configuration.

As for the question about the IP on the client - mine is all set as "Obtain automatically". Do you have a static or dynamic IP?

I want to give it a static IP (Windows will Boot much faster) but it wont work on the client. Now I looked in the microsoft knowledge base found a way to fix this but it didn't work. Buhhh
